The Spring Book Fair is coming!
May 1 – 7, 2010


The SACS PTO will host our annual Spring Scholastic Book Fair from May 1 to May 7th. We are kicking the fair off early this year in the school gymnasium during the Maple Festival Pancake Breakfast. You can come on in and see the selection Saturday and Sunday (May 1 & 2) from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on those days. During the following week, you can join us in the library from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please support the book fair and help raise funds to purchase books for our children, classroom libraries, and our library. Families, teachers, and the community are invited to attend the Book Fair, featuring a fun theme: Book Fair Diner: All You Can Read!

On Thursday, May 6th, from 6-8 p.m., the Book Fair will feature a special Family Event with story read-alouds, contests, activities, refreshments & door prizes.

Special guest Clifford, the Big Red Dog, will be available to sign books, pose for pictures, and read with your child.

The Book Fair will offer specially priced books to meet every budget. We will also offer educational products, including new releases, award-winning titles, children’s classics, interactive software, adult books, and current bestsellers from more than 100 publishers.

As always, we are conducting a Community Support activity in conjunction with our book fair. During our Spring book fair, we are collecting non-perishable food items for our local food shelf. Please support this effort by sending/bringing in some items. Every student will be recognized for their donation on our “Hunger Fighters” Wall of Fame.

As always, Volunteers are truly appreciated and needed!!!! If you have any time to volunteer during the May 1-7 book fair, please contact Veronica Saffo by email at vjsaffo@comcast.net or phone 527-0081. Whether it is an hour or three, your time is a tremendous boost for our efforts! There will be two set-ups that require support (April 30 and May 2nd).

Science NECAP

All 4th and 8th grade students will be participating in taking the Science NECAPs during the week of May 10th. There are a total of three sessions. The first two sessions are similar to the Fall NECAP with multiple choice and short answer test questions. The third session is a hands-on experiment where students conduct a supervised experiment and then collect, organize, and analyze their data.

A hockey scholarship fund has been established in memory of Diane Lunderville. Diane served as the middle school secretary at St. Albans City School for sixteen years. She had a great love of children and was an avid hockey fan. It is our hope that this scholarship will provide a positive experience for the children selected and the sport that Diane supported throughout her life.

This scholarship (not to exceed $300.00 each) will allow a St. Albans City middle school
boy and girl to attend the hockey school of their choice. The scholarship will be awarded yearly at graduation ceremonies to the boy and girl that exemplify the characteristics that
Diane valued:

• Love of Athletics


• Sportsmanship


• Desire to use one’s abilities to be the very best they can be.

8th grade graduation is scheduled for June 11th, 2010.
Learning Communities (Team USA, Cats in Motion, & Dynamic Design) will host students and families 5:30-6:15. This will be a celebration of students. Learning Communities will give out awards and celebrate together.

Formal graduation will be held in the large gym 6:30-7:30. Other awards and scholarships will be presented at this time and recipients of learning community awards will wear medals signifying their accomplishments. There will be a student speaker from each learning community at graduation.

A reception will follow graduation at 7:30 in the art gallery outside the cafeteria, and a student dance will begin in the cafeteria and conclude at 9:30.

> the Vermont Midi Project to be played in a public performance. Three girls will travel with their teacher to Brattleboro on April 28 to attend workshops and rehearse their
> pieces with professional musicians. The day will culminate with a public
> performance of all the pieces. Students from all over Vermont participated
> in the composing and on-line discussions and revisions with mentors. There
> were only 24 pieces chosen state-wide for this honor. Congratulations!

Fuel up to Play 60
Last week members of the FUEL UP TO PLAY 60 and the food advisory board met with the Abbey to brainstorm our next themed lunch, and taste test items. Remember the Luau Party during spirit week? What a blast! All grade levels took part and incorporated healthy menu items (fruit and yogurt smoothies for one) and physical activity in the way of Limbo, hula hoop, and dancing to make for a fun lunch period. It’s a fact that eating healthy and exercising make you more focused during the school day, and if you’re focused you’re doing better work and getting better grades!! Keep MOVING and think about what you eat. It makes a difference! Anyway stay tuned for announcements about our next themed lunch. Here is a clue…. It is going to take place the first week of May and we may taste something called avocado. You also might want to start practicing some ZUMBA moves if you want to impress your classmates!

It is going to take place the first week of May and we may taste something called avocado. You also might want to start practicing some ZUMBA moves if you want to impress your classmates!

St. Albans City School presents WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN!

St. Albans City School would like to welcome all incoming Kindergarteners
(children who will be 5 before September 1st, 2010) and their parents to
the 2010-2011 school year. You are invited to visit us in the
Kindergarten on Wednesday, April 14th and Tuesday, May 18th from 6 pm to 7
pm. Registration material for Kindergarten screenings will be available.
Your child’s social security numbers, immunization records and birth
