Walk to School Day

Dear Families,

On Friday October 5th the students and teachers of St. Albans City School will participate in WALK TO SCHOOL day to promote fitness and health.  We have created a plan so all students can participate.

1st-8th Graders:
Bused “A” session students will be dropped off at 7:25 AM in the parking lot of Holy Angels church (7/10 of a mile from school) where they will meet with staff who will walk them to school. Bused “B” session students will do their walk in the afternoon at 2:45 PM by walking to the parking lot of Holy Angels church.  From there they will be bused home at the normal time.

Kindergarteners:
Kindergarten students will arrive at school as usual.  Those being bused will be escorted at 2:00 PM on their walk from school to the Public Works complex.  The kindergarteners will then get on the bus to go home at the normal time.

We welcome other family members to join our walk. One-way is about 7/10 of a mile. Contact Mitch Craib at craibm@fcsuvt.org or 527-0565 if you have any questions.

Estimator Cup Challenge - Water Filling Stations

Our new water filling stations are amazing. It is wonderful to see so many students drinking fresh water and not using plastic bottles that pollute our environment. A healthy, green choice is being made every time we fill up our water bottles.

Our challenge to start the year is designed around  our water filling stations. We are offering two challenges:

1) There is a cube shaped vase in the lobby. How many seconds would it take to fill the vase to the top, where one more drop would overflow?   The jar cannot be taken off the shelf. It can be measured without removing it.  (This is only available for k-3)

__________________  Seconds are needed to fill the vase until it is ready to overflow.

2) Looking at the table below of number of bottles filled per station on Wednesday Morning September 26th, what do you predict that number will be on Friday Morning October 12th? The fountains were put in use late this summer and were only used consistently when school started.

Odyssey of the Mind at SACS!

Hey Kids! Do you think you could build a radio out of coconuts? How about build
a boat with 20 milk cartons, a cardboard box, and a coat hanger? Have you ever
tried?

If you like to sing, act, dance, paint, draw, build stuff, solve puzzles, Mad Libs, or
are generally curious about the world around you, then Odyssey of the Mind is for
you!

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competition for students of all ages,
kindergarten – 12th grade. Teams of students select a problem, create a solution, then present
their solution in an eight minute skit to a panel of judges; competing against other teams
from around the state or even the world. The best part is, you and your team can do almost
whatever you can think of, the only rule is: NO ADULTS ALLOWED!

Here’s an example problem from this year’s competition.

The problem is to design, build, and run three vehicles that will deliver parts to an Assembly
Area. The team will create a signal that lets the audience know which vehicle is about to travel
and deliver a part. The parts will be assembled into a pet animal. Once assembly is completed,
the animal will perform a trick. The theme of the presentation must include the delivery of the
parts, the assembly, and the pet animal.

If this sound like fun to you, come check out the OM table at open house or have your parents
contact Chris Lenox at clenox@gmail.com or 524-9810 for more information.

Parents

Teams are forming now, if this sound like something your child would be interested in please contact me
for more information. If your child is in 6th-8th grade you can sign up for Odyssey of the Mind through
Open doors now. The state competition is Saturday March 23rd 2013, please be sure you and your child
can commit for the entire season. Team practices are generally once/week for 1-2 hours. Also if you are
interested in volunteering, I am looking for coaches for a 3rd-5th grade, Division I team. All you need to be a
coach is 1-2 hours/week of spare time and a little patience.

Chris (Division I coach and school coordinator )

SUSTAINABLE FUNDRAISING by DYNAMIC DESIGN

The Dynamic Design Learning Community is continuing our stewardship project, sustainable fundraising, to benefit St. Albans City School.  This fundraising effort allows us to raise a significant amount of money without selling items or making direct requests for money from those in our school community.  This fundraising is in addition to what the PTO already has in place for this year’s fundraisers.

The sustainable fundraisers that we collect are: Box Tops for Education, Labels for Education, Hannaford Helps Schools, Price Chopper Tools for Schools, and the Tyson A+ Project. Keep your eye out for videos and more details about these programs in future announcements.

Last year, we raised just under $2000.00 for the school and this was shared equally among learning communities.  The money raised will continue to be allotted this way in 2012-2013.

Each trimester we will have a collection contest and the winners will be announced at the Pep Rallies.  The winning community will receive a certificate and a prize of choice from the Labels for Education catalog. Contest details coming soon!

So let's get clipping and increase our earnings this year!!
