Discovery Has Raider Pride!

Discovery shows Raiders Pride by showing others that our community is part of the whole school, not just one community. Another thing that shows that Discovery has Raiders pride is our team shirts. Our shirts are Raiders shirts. Discovery thinks of SACS as one big community, has good sportsmanship and supports other teams.

Discovery knows that, in order for our school to succeed, we have to support each other. So, if any Raider community needs a hand, they can count on Discovery to be there. Go Raiders!

Team USA and VT Health Department Perform Experiment

Chris, from the Vermont Department of Health, lead Team USA students in a scientific experiment at City School.  As part the Green Ribbon Award process, City School is under going some radon testing.  Chris discussed how the experiment is performed and gave us a real example of a scientific process.  Students learned about radon and how high levels of it can effect us and the environment.  Students distributed the radon test vials throughout the entire first floor of the school. They will be collecting the vials later in the week.  The VT Department of Health will analyze and report the data.  Look for the students
 to communicate the findings.

Engineering Day

45 students from grades 4-8 went the the Vermont Air National Guard to participate in UVM's Engineering Day. Engineering Day is an opportunity for students to try their hand at being an engineer and going through the design cycle of planning, creating, testing and revising projects. We had 45 students compete in 4 different events: Edible Cars, Smartphones, Playful Invention and Tallest Tower. The goal in edible cars was to make a car with wheels that rolled out of only food items.  Students were really creative, making license plates with alphabet noodles, using a pumpkin to make a carriage and using fondant to shape a realistic looking purple car. Two of our groups: Dakota and Cole and Hailey, Abbie, Cecie and Ava won awards in this event. The playful invention competition brought out all different ideas, from totally digital inventions to using motors to create a car competition complete with an arena. David, Haley, Rebecca and Skylar took home the overall first place prize in this event for their design of a toy bear with an i-pod build in where you can play games, include The Mystery of Threll, an RPG (role playing game) game they created.  Kiara, Derek, Colin, Margot and Thomas also took home awards in this category. Ms. Bertucci would like to acknowledge all the participants for their hard work and creativity that went into making this day a successful learning experience.  She would like to recognize the hard work and dedication of Cooper, Ian and Benjamin who came in during all planning period and WIN times to design, test and revise their tower design. They continued to improve and rework their design to get higher and higher heights.
To read more about it take a look at the Engineering Day Article written by 2 of our students.

Discovery Students Discover Pi

-- On 3/14 Discovery students went crazy over Pi and Pie. Our community learned all about this irrational number and with a hands on activity they discovered the relationship between any circle's diameter and circumference.
It has been represented by the Greek letter "π" since the mid-18th century, though it is also sometimes written as pi. We learned that the decimal representation, beginning 3.14, never ends and never settles into a permanent pattern. Some of our sixth grade girls even created a song dedicated to Pi Day!

Pi Day from Kristen Klein on Vimeo.

Here are the lyrics to the song:
Pi Day Parody of Friday
Gotta wake up its March 14
Gotta put pi under my whip cream.
Gotta have a plate
Gotta have a fork
Today is 3.14
Checking my diameter
Cutting a slice for me and her
Looking for circumference
Searching for the radius
Gotta make my mind up
Witch one should I choose?
It’s pi day pi day
Gotta eat pie on pi day
Everyones looking forward to math class math class
It’s pi day pi day
Gotta eat pie on pi day
Everyones looking forward to math class math class
Radius radius yeah!
Radius radius yeah!

Do you know what that is?
Checking the perimeter of this circle

SACS Joke of the Week with Mrs. Biggie

*video will not display in email. click here to view.

From the Health Office

A review of ways to avoid pest problems.

There are pests such as lice and bed bugs that can be a real nuisance. While they are not going to make you sick, they are just so annoying. Treating them can be time consuming. These pests are everywhere, and school is one place they could be. Sleepovers are listed as one of the major places for them to spread. Movie Theaters, Hotels, Airplanes, Taxis, etc. are other key places.

No matter how clean we are, this can happen to anyone. By being aware we can best avoid getting these pests.

  • Do not share hats or other clothing.
  • Do not share hair accessories.
  • If you are unsure, please go see the nurse.
  • Teachers please get rid of fabric pillows, blankets and clothing share baskets.
  • Lost and found bins will be sealed and stored in Mrs. Trainer’s area, if you take something from lost and found make sure you wash and dry before wearing. We will put it in a plastic bag for you.
  • If you have a lost item, we will only be keeping the items for 2 weeks, so find items as soon a you know they are lost.
  • If you put your name on all personal items (coats, hats, gloves, ski pants, boots) we will return it and not put it in the bin. Hockey tape is available at the front desk to help you put your name in everything.

Click here for the letter that was sent home with all students on Thursday.
