Second Floor Speaks

The St. Albans City School Newspaper called Second Floor Speaks, has just wrapped it's final article.  Students from all of the sixth grade classes met once a week (Fridays) to work with peers and write articles about our school.

The groups were broken up into four categories...

All Things New - A group dedicated to letting the people know about all the cool new things at our school.

Going Green - A group dedicated to discussing ways to stay green and how our school is doing so.

Learning For a Lifetime - A group working on learning about people in our building and how they continue to learn.

What's Happening - Students working to keep you up to date and all the school's activities.

Please click on the link to check out our school newspaper and review all that has happened this year at St. Albans City School.

Tutoring

Parents of After School Tutoring students, please fill out our Parent Survey.  We will be sending a paper copy home with your child or you can go to our web page on the St. Albans City School web site. We would like to get your feedback by May 10.

The picture above is of the blueberry bushes planted in front on the parking lot. Please be mindful of them and do not cut through them. Welcome Back!

SACS is a Green Ribbon School!

At SACS, we know we have so much to be proud of and now the entire nation knows too! SACS has been named a "Green Ribbon School" by the US Department of Education. We were awarded the Green Ribbon in large part because of our amazing students who compost food waste every day, monitor and conserve energy, and lead and participate in our "Green Up" days.  Go Raiders!

Ecybermission Winners

Students from Team USA and Reniassance participated in E-cybermission which is a web-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) competition sponsored by the US Army.

Team USA's "Fierce Four" took first place  for 8th grade and were each awarded a $1000 savings bond.

Team USA's "Steelers" took first place for 7th grade and were each awarded a $1000 savings bond.

Renaissance's "Robo Chump" took second place for 8th grade and were each awarded a $500 savings bond.
Congratulations to all of the winners!

Railroad Crossing Closure

The No. Elm St. railroad crossing is now closed to all vehicle traffic for repairs.  A Railroad representative informed us the crossing will be closed through June and that there will be an adult to cross students who walk to and from school over the tracks. The impact to busing will be minimal.

Band

Thank you to the Sr. Band for a great parade for the Vermont Maple Festival on Sunday.

5th and 6th grade band lessons are happening today, and Jr. Band for 5th and 6th is tomorrow.

There will be no  beginning string lessons after school today. Lessons will be on Wednesday. Karson will also not be having a lesson this afternoon.

The World Fit Walking 40 day competition begins Today (Monday April 29th) and goes for 40 days (June 7th).  About 130 4th/6th and 180 K-3rd graders will be participating.  The goal is to walk 1-2 miles a day at school and complete as many miles as possible during the time period.  Children will be able to compare their miles with other kids/classrooms/schools.  Family and friends can also participate and share miles walked with specific registered kids (in 4th-6th grade).  Other forms of exercise can count towards walking miles.  Performance results will be posted in daily announcements each week.

To donate miles to a child, or to simply keep track of your own walking/exercising efforts, register as a buddy at

Rosie's Girls

Rosie's girls is a 3 week camp for middle school girls that encourages participants to develop and strengthen their capacities and confidence and helps them expand their perception of the range of educational and career options that are attainable in an atmosphere that is fun, supportive and positive.  We do this through introducing them to trades like carpentry, engineering and firefighting.  We also spend time getting to know each other, being creative, and exploring what it means to be a middle school girl and what pressures and expectations are all around.  Each girl takes home a toolbox they make complete with a set of tools, along with tons of new experiences, and great friendships.   Please contact Erica Bertucci (bertuccie@fcsuvt.org or 527-0565 x 5051) for more information. Erica is our Tech Ed teacher and also runs the program in the summer.  Here is an application with more information.

News from The Incredibles

Students in the Incredibles have been working on their persuasive skills. All students were given a week long challenge to sell a not so interesting product.  The products range from binder clips to masking tape to a paper clip.  Students were able to choose their partners and figure out the best ways to persuade the judges.

Some students even became City School's very own Billy Mays and made infomercials. The winners of the persuasive contest we rewarded with some small prizes.

Check out some examples:
