Green Ribbon

To win our Green Ribbon School award we had to show that we have worked hard to reduce our school's energy use.  Here is a video that shows one way in which students have been involved in the process.

Other things we have done to reduce our school's energy use are as follows...
-replaced our school's entire heating, air conditioning and lighting systems
-added thermal shades to our windows to keep heat in when we want it and out when we don't.
-put in a much more efficient hot water heating system
-changed our school's bus use patterns resulting in less driving and less fuel use

SACS Green Ribbon delegation is traveling to Washington DC today to receive our award!

Green Ribbon

To win national Green Ribbon recognition we had to show how we had made changes to promote EXERCISE.  One example of our commitment to exercise is our participation in the World Fit walk.  By taking part in this event we are trying to increase fitness and minimize risk for obesity.

This 1.5-minute video highlights the World Fit Walk.

Other steps we have taken to provide students with opportunities to exercise are...
-expanded our athletic fields and added an outdoor basketball court & new playground
-increased the number of sports teams supported
-refurbished our gymnasium with new lighting, air flow systems and (soon) bleachers
-added a fitness room for those not interested in traditional P.E. and for disabled students
-added Dance, Tae Kwon Do and outdoor play classes (among others) to before- and after-school programs
-made available staff membership to the Collins Perley Center at no charge
-developed on-line City School exercise videos can be used indoors on poor weather days.

Green Ribbon

To win the Green Ribbon award we highlighted many of the good things we are doing to improve our environment and our health.  Planting an apple and pear orchard near our school garden is one of those things.  This two minute video shows students planting fruit trees and talking about the project.

*video will not display in email. click here to view.

Other ENVIRONMENTAL steps we have taken that won us Green Ribbon recognition are...
-2nd and 3rd graders helped eliminate paper use and saved pencils.
-All students provide support for collecting and composting food waste
-We had a student driven initiative to save over a million gallons of water per year
-We have a student driven effort to reduce energy use through conservation measures
-We have an array of initiatives to grow food on school property and to purchase food from local sources.

8th Grade Personal Learning Plans

Please join us on Thursday May 30th starting at 6:00 in Learning Communities with a reception in the Art Gallery by the Cafeteria from 6:30-7:30.

Listen to each student present in 2-5 minutes, their response to the prompt; ‘What is my future (aspiration, career, profession, job), what will it take to achieve it, and how has my time at St. Albans City School prepared me for my future.’

Students will be organized in their Learning Communities. There will be two sessions of speeches for each Learning Community (6:00-6:30) and (6:45-7:15). If you have a child in two Learning Communities, we will help coordinate so that you may attend both. Parents are welcome to attend one or both sessions, and we ask that parents remain for the entire session.

This is the first year that we are having students complete this performance task. We believe that helping them learn to communicate effectively will be very valuable as they emerge as young adults. Focusing them on their future will help them to see the value of their education, and help them persevere so they can reach their dreams.

News from Team Imagination

Team imagination's 2nd & 3rd graders have been so lucky this year to learn more about science from St. Albans' very own Dr Einstein and her assistant Filbert.    On Friday she visited to speak to the students about aerodynamics. After accidentally dropping an egg on our classroom floor she challenged our budding engineers to create an egg protector. She provide the students with an array of supplies including tin foil, pipe cleaners, paper towels and paper clips to name a few.  The students created a variety of protectors that were so good that Dr Einstein thought the eggs could survive a fall from the roof. A few phone calls later Mr. Pelkey was on the roof of the school while we cheered on each egg drop. Four of the egg protectors worked!  We all learned a lot and had so much FUN experimenting.  We want to Thank Dr Einstein and Filbert!
