Band

The Tupperware Fundraiser went home on Wednesday and Thursday to students who have registered for the DC Band Trip in the Spring. Orders and money are due to Mrs. Gunter on 11/7. No late orders will be accepted.

Band lessons today include beginning clarinets, bass guitar, Mason and Joseph this morning, and alto sax this afternoon.


Congratulations to the 5th grade beginning band in Incredibles and Discovery for a great concert on Thursday morning.

News from PAG 2014





Last weekend, PAG 2014 hosted a "Family Zumba Night". Parents and kids came in costume ready to dance. Look for more fun family PAG events in the upcoming months! 

Band

The 5th grade beginning band is presenting our first concert of the year at 8:30 today. It will feature students in Discovery and the Incredibles.

Jr. Band is rehearsing today at 12:15

6th grade drums, trombone, and alto sax have their lesson today.

Caleb S. has a make up lesson today at 11:30 on string bass.

Sr. Band is ON for today.

The City School Orchestra is not rehearsing this afternoon.

News from Investigators




3rd Grade Investigators in Miss Rouleau's class have been busy earning letters this year!  To award safe and achieving behavior the class earns letters to spell out a reward of their choice.  For 3 weeks the class worked hard to earn the letters spelling out "Bring in Sydney".  Sydney is Miss Rouleau's chocolate lab puppy who is 18 months old and weighs 62 pounds!  She visited the 3rd graders in their classroom last Thursday morning! 

Band

A reminder to band students who have already registered for the trip, deposits are due to Mrs. Gunter tomorrow.  

The dress rehearsal for the 5th grade concert is on today, this morning. Ms. Gelfon is conducting.

All band lessons are cancelled today, Mr. Mehaffey is out. Sr. Band students should stay with their teams this afternoon. Tomorrow will be a normal day for band students.

String lessons this afternoon are cancelled.

Jr. Band will be rehearsing tomorrow.

There is no full Orchestra tomorrow afternoon.

Cheer Challenge


The BFA Cheerleaders will be hosting the Fall Academy Cheer Challenge on Sunday, November 3 at 12. There will be 12 teams from around the state. The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for students.  There will also be concessions and tshirts for sale. All proceeds benefit the BFA Cheer program..Doors open at 10 am.

Red Ribbon Week

6th Grade students in Miss Gelfon's music class have been learning about the music of West Africa. Check out their Orff arrangement of Sansa Kroma, a folk song from Ghana. Watch for more videos from Miss Gelfon's music class!

6th grade cellos are at 8:30, 7th grade cello at 9, and 5th grade cello at 1:30 today.


Jr. Band is at 12:15 today, and 6th grade violins are after school today at 2:45.

Team Discovery went on a field trip to research growing Christmas trees.  With the knowledge they gained the students expect to put together a proposal for a small Christmas tree farm on school property.  You can see what they learned in this video.

Red Ribbon Week


The week of October 28 - November 1 we will celebrate Red Ribbon Week at St.Albans City School. Red Ribbon Week is celebrated in schools across the country to increase public awareness of drug abuse and to promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The theme for this year is “A Healthy Me is Drug Free”.


Our Vermont Kids Against Tobacco (VKAT) group has developed themes and activities that will be implemented during the week to promote a drug-free, smoke-free, healthy community. You can get involved at home by helping to reinforce the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and saying “No” to drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.


Each day during the week children and staff will support Red Ribbon Week through various activities and dressing up for theme days. Please refer to the themes listed below.


Monday: “Put a cap on Drugs” -Wear a hat day
Tuesday: “Team up and say No to drugs” - Wear your favorite sports team shirt
Wednesday: “A healthy me is drug free” - Wear red day
Thursday: “Be a hero, have the POWER to say NO” - Wear your favorite superhero tee shirt

Zumba Tonight

PAG 2014 is hosting a Family Halloween Zumba party tonight in the gym from 6:30-7:30. 


Dance Tonight


Team Triumph is hosting a dance tonight (10/25) in the cafeteria from 6-8.

Arrival and Dismissal from Dances:

Students enter through the gymnasium doors and sign themselves into the dance.

School Expectations (Safe, Achieving, Caring) remain at all evening events and that includes dances.

At the end of our dances, chaperones and staff will walk students through the building to our front lobby. We will dismiss from there.

Please be prompt for pick up as staff and chaperones need to get home too. If your student does not have a ride home, please don’t send them to our dances unless they have made arrangements before coming to the dance.


Band

Band lessons for beginners and bass guitar are today. Please be on time.

7/8 Jazz Band is at 1:55 today.

Spelling Bee


The 5/6 Spelling Bee Team is out celebrating their victory. They won the  District Spelling Bee. The team moves on to the Regional competition on November 2nd.
  
Codesmyths is Ready for Take-Off





Last week, on Wednesday, October 16th, almost seventy 4th-8th grade students came to an information session on Codesmyths.  Codesmyths is an opportunity for students in grades 4-8 to learn how to program computers and eventually make mobile apps (for the iPad and other devices).  The main focus of the course is really learning how to learn and building the habits of teaching yourself.  It was great to all see the interest in the course.  The first day of class starts today.  Congratulations to those who made it!  And to those who didn't, we're truly sorry we couldn't accept all seventy of you, but we are working on other ways for students to experience computer programming.  Keep your eyes open for new opportunities!  Keep getting better at reading, writing, and math!  You need all of them and more for programming!

Last week, a quiz was given at lunch on facts about tobacco by VKAT. VKAT stands for Vermont Kids Against Tobacco and SACS has a group of 7th and 8th graders that meet once a week to talk about making healthy choices. If any 7th and 8th graders would like to join VKAT, please see Mrs. Trainer, Mrs. Gunter or Ms. Hersey for an application. Congratulations to quiz winners Brennen and Kyleigh!

Boxtops for Education

WOW, City School!  We're taking Box Tops collection to a whole new level!  Our first shipment has a grand total of 3,400 Box Tops!  That gives us a great start for the school year, but we're still a long way from our goal of 16,000 Box Tops!  Please remember to keep clipping and collecting - we'll be announcing a new collection contest for learning communities this week!

Walk to School Day





We estimate 100 children came in on Friday by bike or on foot, double the normal amount -in spite of a dark and foggy morning.  Thanks to all the students, parents, volunteers and staff that made the event happen.

And the Winner is...


Above is the winning logo chosen by students at lunch, and it will be used on this years T- shirts and hoodies!

Order forms for Raider tees and hoodies will be sent home with students on Thursday. Please return all checks and orders to Ms. Wight (PE teacher) by October 30th.

Band

Band lessons are for 6th grade flutes, Mioka, Trumpets,and Sadie this morning. 5th grade violins are after school today.

6th grade strings should come to the 5th grade string rehearsal this afternoon. You will be able to make the B bus.

Full orchestra is rehearsing tomorrow, and will be playing until 3:30. Please make sure that you arrange a ride for after practice. 

Since testing is now done, Mr. Mehaffey expects that all band and string students will be responsible for being at their lesson on time. That is each students responsibility.
