Band

6th grade Band lessons today include 6th grade clarinets, bass guitar, Ben, Aria, and drums, and Anna and Maia at 10:30.

Winter Collection Contest Results



Well done, City School Community!  As expected, the 6th and final week of our Box Tops and Labels for Education competition was our biggest collection week of all!  Our school collected over 11,000 Box Tops and Labels for Education points!  Wow!
Congratulations and a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to everyone!  

The leaders by cluster level:
7-8 Dynamic Design = 1,047 points
4-6 Team Triumph = 951 points
1-3 Investigators = 1,588 points
and all on their own, Bright Beginnings (K) collected 2,167 points!

Our winter contest is over, but PLEASE DON'T STOP COLLECTING!  We collect Box Tops and Labels for Education ALL YEAR LONG!

Next Walk-to-School Day is Friday March 7th

Please begin to plan for the next Walk-to-school Day the week after our February break. We really want to see if we can get 200 students and staff to walk/bike in. Those coming to school under their own steam will collect a wrist band, sticker and a pencil at the front entrance. Feel pride in exercising this way and for minimizing fossil fuel use.

Please sign in at the front desk every day that you walk or bike in, not just walk-to-school days.

Open Doors

The following Open Doors classes begin today, Friday February 21st:
  • Glee

All session A students taking Open Doors classes go to the cafeteria at 2:45 dismissal.

Japanese class and Spanish class will begin Friday, March 7th.

Recess
Emma from Investigators found a perfect heart in the snow at recess!

News from The Travelers



Third grade travelers had 4th grade visitors to find out about life upstairs. Lots of questions we asked and were answered. We learned how important our math fact sare and homework is and that we should look forward to the fun times upstairs!

Band

Jr. Band is rehearsing today.

6th grade lessons include alto saxes and clarinet this morning.

Open Doors


The following Open Doors classes begin today, Thursday, February 20th:
  • Djembe Drummers Play it Again
  • Leadership and Public Speaking
  • Lets Speak French at BFA
·         Session B students taking French will board bus #3 at 3:10.  The students will check in with Open Doors at bus #3 before boarding the bus.

  • CHOMP will begin on Thursday, March 6th and Girls on Run will meet on Thursday, March 27th (Girls on Run also meets on Tuesdays)

  • Lets Talk Money and Girl Scouts Agents of Change start date to be announced.

Another Reminder To Parents & Families of 8th Graders:

We are working on the Class of 2014 yearbook, and you have the opportunity to continue the tradition of including a baby picture (cost $5) and/or personal message (cost $2) for your graduating 8th grader.  Please put picture/message and payment in an envelope or plastic bag marked with the student name to turn in to their team teachers or send directly to Briana Maguire, Yearbook Advisor, c/o St. Albans City School.  Pictures will be scanned and returned to you promptly. The deadline isFriday, March 7th, but as soon as possible is appreciated.

(Cash or Checks payable to “SACS” with “Yearbook” in the memo. All money and donations will be used directly for the publishing and printing costs of the yearbooks. Please contact Briana Maguire with any financial hardship concerns.)

February is Childrens Dental Health Month

Did you know that even if you brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes up to 35 percent of your teeth may still be unclean if you do not floss as well?  

If your child has received a dental appointment form please fill out the missing information and send it back to school.

News from Team Triumph



Team Triumph's 4th, 5th, and 6th graders enjoyed a great day of skiing at Jay Peak on Monday, February 3rd.

Band

T-Shirt Forms went home on Monday. We would like everyone who is in Senior Band and all other band students going on the trip to have a T-Shirt. The forms and money are due back to Mrs Gunter on 3/7. If this presents a hardship to your family please contact Mrs. Gunter ASAP. This is not a fundraiser, as the T-shirts are being sold at cost.

Open Doors



The following Open Doors classes begin today Tuesday, February 18th:
Archery
  • Session B students taking Archery will board bus #2 at 3:10.  Archery students will check in with Open Doors at bus #2before boarding the bus.
Lego Challenge- held at City School
Hip Hop Tuesday (4th-8th)- held at City School. 

All session A students taking Open Doors classes go to the cafeteria at 2:45 dismissal.
Felted Fun will begin on Tuesday, March 11th
  • On March 11th, Session B students taking Raiders Knitting will board bus #6 at 3:10.  Knitting students will check in with Open Doors at bus #6 before boarding the bus.

Girls on the Run begins Tuesday, March 25th (This class also meets on Thursday)

Engineering Day is TODAY at 12:30-2:30 in the Tech Ed Room! Participants, please be on time and be ready to present your projects.  We will have a special guest who will present his design projects.  Engineering Day Competitors will also have a chance to compete in the tallest tower contest.     Box Tops and Labels for Education Collection Contest Update!




    Happy Valentine's Day, City School Community!  We are feeling so much love for Box Tops and Labels for Education thanks to everyone's great support!

    Our collection numbers were lower this week, but we hope that just means everyone was saving up for this FINAL WEEK of collecting!  Winners will be announced before vacation.  Keep on Clipping those Box Tops and Labels for Education!

    News from Team Discovery



    The 5/6th graders in Team Discovery have been learning about biographies in reading class. They were able to study a famous person in writing class that they were reading about and write out a talk show script to present in front of the class. Albert Einstein was one of the many who was interviewed.

    News from Explorers



    Slowest parachute

    The first grade Explorers have been learning about inventors. Last week they studied Leonardo DaVinci and his invention, the parachute. The class spent their day trying to make a parachute that would stay the longest in the air. After creating them, they timed each one to see whose would stay in the in the longest, launching them in one of the stairwells.

    Band

    Organic Seed Fundraiser packets went home on Tuesday. They are due back to Mrs. Gunter on 3/7. No late orders will be accepted. If you have any questions, please email gunterd@fcsuvt.org.

    6th grade band lessons for flutes, clarinet, trumpet, horn,  and beginning trumpet are today.

    Jr. Band is on Thursday.

    Jazz Band will be on Thursday this week, because of the 8th grade field trip to BFA on Friday.

    Autism Awareness
    T-Shirt Design Contest

    Students: please help spread autism awareness by designing an autism awareness design to be printed on t-shirts.
    -Entries must be received by February 14th
    -Entries can be any shape, but must be no larger than a 10x10 square
    -Put your name on the back of your design
    -Place your design in the box outside of Kaleidoscope (second floor, across from the photocopier)
    -Student voting for their favorite design will be done anonymously between February 17th-19th
    -Voyagers community will announce the top five winning designs on February 21st.
    -Ask your teachers for 12 facts about autism that you could use in your designs

    St. Albans Raiders Wins Fai-To

    The Raiders challenged Cowes Enterprise College from the United Kingdom in one of hundreds of battles, Fai-To, taking place in the the Mangahigh Fai-Tea.  The battles pitted U.S. schools vs U.K. schools in observance of the British Tea Laws that initiated the Boston Tea Party.  The Raiders won five straight rounds and took home their newest trophy, a coffee cup.  This trophy is a replica of the coffee cup used by Andrew Wiles, who finally proved Fermat’s Last Theorem in 1995, just over 300 years after the problem was first noted.

    The Raider Cheerleaders traveled to South Burlington on Saturday to compete in the NVAC Cheerleading Competition. The 5/6 team took First Place in the Youth Division and the 7/8 took Third Place in the Middle School Division. Individual Medals were won by the 7/8 team in stunting, jumps and tumbling. Congratulations to the cheerleaders for representing SACS!

    For anyone interested in BACKSTAGE CREW for Aladdin, there is a meeting TODAY during A SESSION AND B SESSION WIN TIME. Come to whichever Win session you are here for.

    Team USA Takes Part in Youth Day of Climate Action

    Youth Day of Climate Action was held at the Vermont State House in Montpelier. 
    The focus of the day was on the divestment of state pension plan money from fossil fuels. 
    Team USA attended the event. 3 Students provided testimonials in support of the divestment bill. 
    Franklin County representative, Norm McAllister is on the committee.
    Team USA members start speaking around the 14:15 mark.

    Save the date ~ The 2nd Annual Staff/Student Basketball Game will be held at SACS on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at 4:00 pm.

    Admission $2 per person- There will be a concession stand and foul shooting (fundraiser) challenge at half-time.

    Open Doors acceptance letters were distributed to teachers on Monday, February 10th.  Please read your acceptance letter because not all classes start next week.
