Walk to School Day Wednesday Sept 3rd

Our first of at least 16 Walking Wednesdays will happen this Wednesday.  You are encouraged to join one of the seven "walking school buses" that meet at designated locations and gather up students along a specific route.  Teachers & Staff lead these walking buses and will get students to school on time.

Any student who walks or bikes in on a Walking Wednesday will receive a sticker and a pencil.  Parents who join a walking bus or come with their children independently are welcome to coffee and oatmeal at the cafeteria.  We may be able to assist parents who need a ride home on these special days.

Athletics

The Boys 5/6 soccer team will be practicing Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5:00-6:30PM.

HELP US EARN FREE PENCILS!

It's the beginning of the school year, so that means lots of new pencils and art supplies are being used. Teachers, students and staff:  Don't forget to clip the green or blue "Prang Power" coupon from the package of Ticonderoga, Prang, or Dixon products. We use them to get free pencils for our school! Sustainable Fundraisers from Team Discovery will collect them (or you can put them in Ms. Maguire's mailbox). Thanks!

Farm to School Fall Global Warming Mum Fundraising Sale

Orders will be taken until 9/12/14. Plants will arrive the following week and you will be contacted by email. Payment must be received to the front desk of school within 2 days of placing your order. What are Global Warming Mums?

Global Warming Mums are unique to Vermont Organics Reclamation (VOR), in St. Albans, VT. They help keep plastic pots out of our environment, give bees fall food, and have a positive effect to help reduce global warming.

What is a “Global Warming Mum?”

•Typically, mums are “annuals”. That means growers must buy new ones and plant them each fall.
•The Global Warming Mum is a “perennial.” Plant it in the ground once, and enjoy it season after season.

Buying a mum that we only need to plant once puts less stress on our environment.

Helping bees: Global Warming Mums are a good, late fall food source for bees, because...
•Global Warming Mums bloom late – well into November.
•Vermont’s fall temperatures can be higher than 55 degrees.
•And bees fly and feed at temperatures of 55 and above.

The pot is biodegradable. It is made from pressed rice hulls. Plant it into the ground, then break it apart to let the roots grow, and it will disappear over time.

•This is important, considering the U.S. makes about 30 million tons of plastic containers every year.

•VOR’s Global Warming Mums also contain VOR’s soils, which do not have peat. Peat is a carbon that comes from the ground. We have global warming, because there is too much carbon in the air. VOR keeps peat out of its products to keep it in the ground, where it belongs.

Bike Safety Reminder

We had a super biking and walking to school turnout on our first full day of school (Thursday August 28th).  Just check out the bike rack picture to see how big turnout was.  Keep up the good exercise!

Remember that we expect students to wear helmets if you bike, rollerblade, scooter or skateboard to school.  Parents and older students can help the school community by being helmet role models for young students.

If, as suggested, you are using the sidewalks to bike to school, we ask that you walk your bike across crossings.

For helmet questions, please contact Mitch Craib 802 527-0565 x3217 craibm@fcsuvt.org
