Veterans Day

Purple Heart Award
                                                  Written by: Cooper C.

The Purple Heart award is an award given to soldiers who have been wounded in battle and have survived. The veterans who have been wounded are presented with this award. Although these medals have great honor, some of the medals were sold by the veteran when they came back from battle so they would have money to pay the medical bills and any other expenses. There is one veteran, Captain Zach Fike, who knows what these medals mean to one another, so he has begun a mission. He goes to antique sales, garage sales etc. At these sales, he searches for the medals. Once he finds one, he looks on the back for the engraved name of the soldier. He goes all over the country just to return these medals to their rightful owners. The Purple Heart award, is a great honor to the veterans, they gave close to the ultimate sacrifice, sacrificing their lives.

The Purple Heart award began many years ago. The founder of this great award is the very well known George Washington on August 7, 1782. This award means great honor to all veterans who have been wounded  in the line of battle.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
By: Katherine S.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a monument dedicated to the services of an unknown soldier. An unknown soldier is someone who is unidentified after dying in war, mainly Word War I. The monument is a military monument, or grave stone, that has been dedicated to unidentified American soldiers that gave their lives in battle. Each Veterans Day the president lies a wreath on the Tomb. Everyday since 1937 the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has been guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and in any weather by Tomb Guard sentinels. The changing of the guard is very symbolic, but it’s also conducted accorded to Army regulations. When a guard is being changed the relief commander or assistant relief commander has to be present, when the public is witnessing. Before the ceremony, the commander will inform the public that the ceremony is about to take place and asks that those present should remain silent and standing throughout the entire event.

News from The Learning Commons

We are sorry to share the passing of our friend the axolotl, Smeagol, who died early Sunday of an infection, despite the excellent care of Mr. Mike Mandeville, and Dr. Elizabeth of Essex Veterinary Center. Smeagol was approximately 4 years old  and was a gift of Mrs. Borst’s aunt. He was beloved by most, and even met the Commissioner of Education for the state of Vermont.
He enjoyed being read to, hanging out in his tank, boiled chicken, and hiding under his log.

Here is a picture of him in happier times.

Veterans Day

The Red Poppy
By Ian C.
The red poppy is a symbol of the bloodshed that happened in the past. This has been a tradition since Armistice Day in 1919. It started when Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae noticed the poppies that bloomed on some of the most brutal battlefields of World War I. He was a physician and a surgeon as well as a poet. McCrae thought that the red color of the poppies matched the bloodshed of the battles. He wrote the following poem:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
         In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
         In Flanders fields.

After John McCrae wrote this poem, a woman name Moina Michael was inspired to start wearing the red poppy. She purchase 25 silk poppies and handed them out to everyone at a conference. Moina decided that she would try to make the red poppy a national symbol of remembrance. Two years later she had accomplished her goal. The poppy is currently worn by millions of men and women to across the world.

Veterans Day

World War I

World War One started on the July 28th, 1914 and lasted until  November 11th, 1918. The war was triggered when the heir to the throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated. This set off a diplomatic crisis, when Austria had disagreements with Serbia, the two went into combat, and the conflict spread. The U.S, France, British Empire, Russia, and many other countries took the side of Serbia. Then Germany, Bulgaria, and many other lesser forces took the side of Austria. The war ended November 11th, 1918, when the two forces declared armistice (an agreement to stop fighting). It became an official holiday a year later when President Wilson declared it so. The name of a holiday would be changed at a later date by President Eisenhower.
