Wellness Wednesday

Before break, students and staff took part in a Fit and Healthy Kids healthy snack taste test in the cafeteria during lunch time.  Hummus was served with pretzel crisps, veggie crisps or carrots.  Students participating in the taste test were put into a drawing for hummus snack packs.  Many students were skeptical, but over and over we heard, "This is so good!"
Hummus is a great lunchbox or after school snack high in protein, low in calories and fills you up.  Having good "fuel" in your tank helps kids recharge after a busy school day.
Check out page two of this link for ideas and tips.: After school snack ideas

Many thanks to Nina and staff from the Abbey Group, Mrs. Trainer, Mrs. Seymour for their help and to all students who participated.

News from Team USA

BFA Debate Team Visits Team USA

Students from BFA shared their high school experiences with Team USA students. Ronnie, Cordelia, and Nate are City School alumni.  They encouraged students to get involved with the many clubs that are offered at BFA, but were extremely animated about the debate club. Ronnie and Cordelia established the club as sophomores and continue to recruit new members each year.  The club offers an opportunity to practice complex thinking, public speaking, organization, and research skills.  Any future BFA students should consider joining the debate club!

Walking Contest Information

The walking contest has begun for the Spring and will carry on for six weeks.

Tally cards for your community are located at the outside breezeway between Renaissance and USA.  They will be collected each Friday and tallies announced Monday or Tuesday the next week.  The community with the most laps by the end of the six weeks will get a field trip to the City Pool.  The Golden Shoe award will be temporarily granted to the learning community with the most laps each week.

Walking and biking to school will be tallied separately and will not count towards your community's walking at school laps.  Instead regular walkers and bikers will be entered into a raffle for prizes at the end of the school year. Tally cards for that "contest" are in the front lobby.  One raffle ticket for each card completed.

Try to get out and move every day.  Enjoy.   If you have questions, contact Mitch Craib.

SACS Walking Contest Overview - Spring 2015

Now that the weather is getting better, it is time to think about the Spring Six-Week Walking Contest. It will run from April 27th-June 5th. Why do we have this contest? It has been a long winter and children and adults have spent too much time indoors. Every person deserves a chance to move and the contest will give your team incentive to do so  The contest begins on Monday April 27th, the first day back after vacation.

THERE IS A NEW TALLY SYSTEM
The goal is to minimize the tallying load on teachers and to improve motivation among participants.

There will now be 3” x 5” lap tally punch cards for each student and adult.  Teacher’s & Para’s laps count for your team.  Tally cards will be kept in index card boxes by community on a table in the alcove between the exit doors for Renaissance and USA.  On the same table there will be paper punches for use with the tally cards.  I will place the index card boxes out in the alcove daily. Leave the boxes on the table.  Don’t take them back to your community.  At the end of the week I will collect all the cards and tally the laps completed for each home room and team.

Suggestion:
Have a student or adult hand out and collect the cards on each of the days the team comes out to walk/run.  Every time a person completes a lap and passes the alcove, a punch or mark should be made in his or her card.  Students can punch their own cards (honor system) or someone in each learning community can take on the task.

WINNING PRIZE.  The team that accumulates the most laps will win a field trip to the city pool before the end of school.  Each week the team with the most laps will be awarded temporary custody of the GOLDEN SHOE AWARD.

WALKING AND BIKING TO SCHOOL HAS A SEPARATE TALLY SYSTEM
There will be an alphabetized index card box in the lobby.  Students can punch their tally card for getting to school by walking, biking, skateboarding or scootering -one punch for coming to school, one punch for going home.  Students will be given a raffle ticket for each completed tally card.  At the end of the six weeks a drawing will take place for prizes like shirts, a soccer ball, and a one day pass to the city pool.

RESULTS WILL BE POSTED REGULARLY
Data will be evaluated and the results sent out to the entire school the following Monday or Tuesday. Recognition of your team’s laps (mileage) will also be provided in daily announcements.

The Incredibles were VERY impressive first time overall winners of the trophy.  Spring 2014.

The Voyagers easily won custody of the trophy this last Fall 2014.

Who will win for the most walking path laps walked/run this Spring?

Note: Running is allowed on the path, or preferably on the grass beside the path.  Running on the concrete sidewalks is not allowed.
