News from Renaissance

After a summer of sun and moisture, the St. Albans City School rain garden areas were covered in weeds. On Friday the 28th, Renaissance started the big task of ripping up grass and other undesirable plants so that the recently established wetland plants can thrive instead. Students were reminded of the importance of rain gardens for preventing nutrient-rich runoff from parking lots and roofs from entering the drainage system into Lake Champlain.  As a school, we want to minimize our negative impact on lake water quality.

Band lessons for Sr. Band are starting this week. Students are reminded to check their times on the sheet from Mr. M.

Four Winds Volunteers Needed

SACS is in need of parent volunteers to assist with the Four Winds Science program for grades K-6.  We meet every other month and learn cool things about our natural world from the amazing people at Four Winds Nature Institute.

This year the theme is ECOSYSTEMS.  Our first meeting is Tuesday, September 8th, 830am-1030am at St Albans Town School (SACS and SATEC share tuition).  We will learn the content and then you coordinate a time to present the content (about 45min) to your child's class.  All materials are provided and there is scripted content for those of us who are a tad shy.  The kids LOVE this program!!!  This is an excellent way to volunteer at school while accommodating your schedule.  If you are interested, but cannot make the 9/08 meeting, please contact me.  smithh@fcsuvt.org
Please spread the word about this wonderful science enrichment.

An aside:  SACS FOUR WINDS PROGRAM COORDINATOR NEEDED
I am looking to mentor a dedicated volunteer this school year.  Responsibilities include:  attending the meetings (5 throughout the year), bringing the materials provided to school from the training meetings, recruiting volunteers.

**Meeting dates for 2015/2015:  9/08/1510/13/1511/10/1501/12/1603/15/16**

Universal Meals At SACS

Parents and Guardians:

A few years ago, St. Albans City School started offering breakfast for all students at no charge. Starting this school year, we are excited to announce that all students will also eat lunch at no charge. All children enrolled in our school can eat for free each day. Even though there is no application required to participate, we ask that each family please fill out of the household income form that arrived with the first day packets so that we can continue to offer this, along with many other programs that benefit our school and students. If you need a form or you have questions, please contact Desiree Gunter at 527-0565 or gunterd@fcsuvt.org.

Part of what will help our meal program be successful is having every student participate. This benefits not just the student, but our school culture and helps to put more money into our program from the federal government resulting in higher quality food.

We are thrilled be able to offer this program and hope you will encourage your students to participate in school meals each day. Please feel free to contact the school with any questions or to discuss dietary needs.
