Local Cafeteria Offerings
Did you know many choices in the cafeteria come from Vermont and even Franklin County?  This means our food travels less to get to us and supports our Green Mountain State farmers and producers!!

The map of Vermont in the cafeteria is updated every Monday with the Vermont products the Abbey Group is offering and where they are coming from within our state.

A Red Barn on the map indicates a Vermont product and a Maple Leaf indicates product produced even closer to us in Franklin County.  Check out these icons on the map and look for these tasty local offerings on the breakfast and lunch line.

Kindergarten makes Farm to School connection with Apples
Last week Kindergarten took a field trip to Hackett's Orchard.  They picked apples and saw how they are cleaned and processed for sale.  The students and staff returned to St. Albans City School with apples that they are now processing into tasty treats.

On Thursday September 24th, St. Albans City School held an open house.  The school and cafeteria were packed with students and their families.  Many parents enjoyed the tasty spaghetti dinner before heading out to visit classrooms, the book fair and the resource fair.  So many people came that people had to park in the soccer field, local streets and nearby public works.  Thank you to everyone who took the time to visit the school and to all the staff who hosted the evening venues!

Youth Symphony
On Friday September 25th, the Vermont Youth Symphony visited our school.  Students and staff had a chance to listen to beautifully played musical pieces and to meet young musicians who typically started being musicians in 5th or 6th grade.  Individual players from each musical area, such as wood winds or brass instruments, were asked to talk about their interest in being a musician and why they chose their instrument before giving a short demonstration.  In the latter stages of the whole event, string musicians from St. Albans City School joined the Symphony to demonstrate their skills.  The entire performance was inspirational for everyone in attendance.

The Voyagers went out and did more clearing work on their trails through the school wetlands on Wednesday September 23rd.  Everyone who worked on the trails wore rubber boots, work gloves and long pants and sleeves to protect themselves.  Garden sheers, loppers, saws and weed whackers were utilized to make a pathway.  Other students remained in the classroom to research wetlands information and organize educational signs for the new routes.

Pictures of one trail crew making a path, and of another crew removing a tire they found while working in the wetlands.

Happenings in Family and Consumer Science
Farm to school activities have been in full swing all this week! Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Lamb have enjoyed working with students from many communities to prepare several food items for last night's Open House including delicious spaghetti sauce, crab apple muffins, pumpkin muffins and even canned dill pickles! Both teachers would like to thank all of the hard working students whose efforts helped make all food preparations such a big success.

Cross Country Running Update
St. Albans City School students ran really well at Tuesday's (Sept. 22nd) Milton middle school cross country race held at the Arrowhead Golf Course.  Both boys and girls placed finishers in the top ten runner after covering nearly two miles of rolling hills. The weather was perfect for running.

Does anyone recognize this former SACS cross country runner (now at Enosburg) who placed first in the boys middle school race?

Easels Made by HOPE
Brandon and Jesse made two excellent easels from re-purposed wood from the old gym bleachers. Nice work!
