Green Up Day 2018

GREEN UP DAY

From Mayor Tim Smith to St. Albans City School Families,

When I was in elementary school I had fond memories of participating in the
original Green Up Day created by former Governor Deane Davis. As hard as it
might seem now, young school children were loaded up on a school bus and
dispersed along the Interstate to pick up trash. Over the last ten years, our family
has continued to participate in Green Up Day all over St. Albans. As parents we
have used the opportunity to teach our children about the impact of litter on the
environment and what they can do to help each and every day: not just on Green
Up Day.

For the last six years, Boy Scout Troop 70 has taken the lead role in getting the
word out and organizing the St. Albans Green-Up Day and this year they continue
to lead the effort again. For those families and individuals who would like to get
out and help to clean up St. Albans here are some details to help you get started.
The State of Vermont provides each community with kelly green trash bags and
these trash bags will be available on Saturday, May 5 that 9:00 AM at the
following locations:

 14th Star Brewery
 Food City Parking Lot
 Houghton Park
 Barlow St. School
 Taylor Park (above the Memorial)
 St. Albans Town Park
 St.Albans Town Educational Center

Many of the sites will be staffed by the Boy Scouts as well as St. Albans City
Alderpersons. All workers will be rewarded with ice cream being served in Taylor
Park starting at 11:45. In addition to all of the sites listed above, I along with my
children will be handing out bags on Friday, May 4 that the St.Albans City
Elementary School upon dismissal. Please remember, when your bags are full we
ask that you drop them off at the nearest four-way intersection. The Public Works
crews from the City and Town will be picking up the bags and disposing of them
properly.

I must also give a shout out to the 14th Star Brewery for their extensive
involvement over the last four or five years. If individuals register before April
27 that www.14thstarbrewing.com they can receive a t-shirt and barbecue for just
$5.00. What a deal, be a part of the 14th Star Team!!! Thank you to Andrea and
her team for all they do for St. Albans.

I understand everyone has busy schedules and showing up at 9:00 may not be
possible so we will set up a table in front of City Hall at 1:00 for those individuals
that may still want to participate but the morning does not work. Please
remember to bring some gloves and comfortable shoes. In closing it is great to
hear so many people comment on how great the community looks and how much
they love the downtown; here is an opportunity for everyone to play a part in that
success. Grab your family, a neighbor or a friend and make time to spruce up our
community. It is time well spent and you will feel great participating. Thank you

in advance.
Sincerely,
Tim Smith
Mayor of St. Albans City

What is Green Up Day? Green Up Day, always the first Saturday in May, was launched in 1970 by Governor Deane Davis. In 1979, the non-profit organization Green Up Vermont was formed to carry on the tradition of Green Up Day. It is an annual statewide event, when over 22,000 volunteers come together to remove litter from Vermont’s roadsides and public spaces.

In addition to Green Up Day, we have two free downloadable educational booklets designed for grades K-2. To download them, visit the Contests page. Our poster design and writing contests, for grades K-12, also engage children in a hands-on way about the importance of litter-free living. Congratulations to this year’s overall poster design winner, Uma Chirkova, Grade 8, of Newbury. Congratulations to this year’s Writing Contest winner, Eden Morris, Grade 8, of Northfield. You can read and view all the 2018 winning contest entries on our 2018 Winners page.

How is Green Up Day organized? Green Up Day happens all over the state and wouldn’t happen without the dedicated help of our coordinators. Each town has a coordinator that volunteers can contact to get their Green Up bags. To find your town’s coordinator, go to the Get Involved page.

Green Up’s mission is to promote the stewardship of our state’s natural landscape and waterways and the livability of our communities by involving people in Green Up Day and raising public awareness about the benefits of a litter-free environment.
