Dear St. Albans City School Families,
We take safety seriously. Safe, Achieving, Caring is our School tagline. Safe is first. There
has been so much in the news lately around school safety. Each time there is an incident,
we reflect on our procedures and challenge ourselves to find more that we can do to keep
our children safe.
has been so much in the news lately around school safety. Each time there is an incident,
we reflect on our procedures and challenge ourselves to find more that we can do to keep
our children safe.
Earlier this month, SURVIVermont held a community forum and shared three components to
safety. In our school they have trained us on one of these components, Run, Hide, Fight. It is
this component that we have practiced as adults in our school.
safety. In our school they have trained us on one of these components, Run, Hide, Fight. It is
this component that we have practiced as adults in our school.
We are now reviewing that training as a staff. Based on student requests for more training,
we will enhance the standard lockdown drills to discuss “how we stay safe” (follow adult
directions) in younger grades and “our options” (run, hide, fight) in older grades. The drill
this month will include conversations with students before and after the actual drill. We
want our students to feel safe, and we want them to be prepared.

Once we complete this month’s drill, teachers will inform you of what they discussed so
that you will be prepared to support these conversations with your children.
that you will be prepared to support these conversations with your children.
While we are eager to learn and share how to best respond to an emergency situation,
we are very aware it is the work we do each day that will be the most helpful. Creating a
school culture where every child belongs is a key component to making our school safe.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask us.
