PLANTING

This summer, one of the middle school teachers, Mr. Jeff Rouleau, spent countless hours planting and maintaining gardens around the school. One project he took on was the planting and watering of the planters in the Explorers’ outdoor classroom space. In one planter he started sweet potatoes that ended up thriving. It was his hope that students in Explorers could use the sweet potatoes in a project, which is exactly what they did.

HARVESTING AND PROCESSING

This October, Mr. Weisburgh, one of the instructors in Explorers worked with a few students to harvest the fully grown sweet potatoes. He cooked them and then brought them to school to become the foundation for three sweet potato pies. Six students used a sweet potato pie recipe to assemble and process the ingredients in the School’s community kitchen.

TASTING

On Thursday, October 13th, all three Explorer classrooms received a pie to try. Most students were willing to taste and eat this unfamiliar type of dessert and most found it delicious. Here are pictures of the students in the process of taste testing.

LITERACY

Here are 3rd grade adjectives describing the pie they tasted.
