ANNOUNCEMENTS through JULY 7th

The first week in July will be a time of continued construction and cleaning projects prior to the arrival of some children returning for Summer programming.

SUMMER REPORTS AND PICTURES THE GREEN VERMONT SUMMER IS HERE Here are two pictures taken above school property that showcases St. Albans City School's beautiful setting.  June 28th, 2017 Facing East towards Hard'ack and French Hill. Facing West towards Lake Champlain. FRONT STEPS MAKEOVER Anyone who walked up the front entrance steps into St. Albans City School in recent years noticed how problematic the stairs were. The metal strips on the edge of many steps had begun to separate from the concrete. The application of glues and sealants helped minimize tripping hazards, yet the stairs remained an eyesore.  Now the stairs are being torn out and rebuilt. We expect the new configuration and the quality of the construction work will make for an excellent change. This picture of the front steps was taken last Fall, 2016. The pictures below were taken on June 27th and 28th 2017. REPAIRING AND REPAVING THE BUS CIRCLE In preparation for the new school year, and changes to the bus schedule, the bus circle is being improved. Cracks and potholes are being filled and a new coat of asphalt added. MAPLE SUGARING AND APPLE CIDER MAKING HOUSE DELIVERED. A beautifully built shelter for housing a maple sap evaporator and a cider press was delivered on June 28th to the concrete pad beside the cafeteria. In the Fall children will be able to process and press apples into cider regardless of the weather. And, in the late winter/early spring students can steam off water from the maple sap they gather from trees on school property, creating wonderful syrup. We are excited about this wonderful experiential learning facility for students and staff at St. Albans City School. SOLAR PANELS ON THE MAINTENANCE SHED + nearby construction Energy producing solar panels have been placed on the southern side of the school's maintenance shed. The Direct current power they produce is converted to alternating current with an inverter located on the outside of the building.  The power produced is a modest but important step the school is taking to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels for energy production. Right next to the shed, the foundation is being prepared for a new building to house some of our 2017/2018 PreK students. Their building is conveniently located across from the new and gradually improving playground for our smaller students.

REPORTS AND PICTURES TEACHER/STAFF TRAINING Teachers and staff members from around the MRUSD district are spending two days to St. Albans City School to update their training on positive (conscious) discipline (or PD) June 22nd and 23rd. The goal of the training is to practice reinforcing positive behaviors in children and colleagues, and to strive to see the best in every person. Ultimately, the district wants every child and adult in our school system to learn and develop in a positive environment. One of our tech teachers, Mrs. Grace Borst, dropped by school on Thursday 6-22-2017 to give people a chance to view her new baby, Eliza.  There was a lot of interest in seeing the two of them and many wished Mrs. Borst and the baby well. Eliza was born June 19th. 8 lbs 10 oz.

REPORTS AND PICTURES STUDENTS HEADED OUT FOR SUMMER BREAK On Tuesday and Wednesday (June 20th and 21st, 2017) batches of students departed the building for their summer break.  As is the tradition, staff stood outside at the bus loading zone to say goodbye and wave. There were hugs, smiles, tears and excitement. The buses hooted their horns as they roared off into the community. In two short months a new school year cycle will begin. LINK TO MORE GOODBYE PICTURES STEP UP DAY Wednesday June 21st was step up day for students moving up to a different learning community. PreK students moved up to Kindergarten. Kindergarteners moved up to 1st grade. Third graders moved up to 4th grade. Sixth graders moved up to 7th grade. It was a two hour day filled with welcomes and introductions. EVENTS It is step-up day.  Arrival and departure times may be different than normal for the few students coming to school on Wednesday.  Please pay attention to whatever your teachers told you about bus transport and parent drop off times at school. ST. ALBANS PLAYGROUP PARENTS WITH 0 TO 5 AGED CHILDREN TAKE NOTE:  St. Albans playgroup will be CANCELLED (taking a break!) for the months of July and August and will resume in September. Instead of playgroup next week, we will meet at the Rail Trail at 10am for a scavenger hunt and some snacks with the Health Department! Dunes Day is next Friday and all families to state they are “with the parent child center” will be granted FREE entry for the day! REPORTS AND PICTURES HOSS'S DOGG HOUSE  Many learning communities have recently taken a quick walking trip to Hoss's Dogg House for some creemees.  In this case it was Triumph.  The students loved the short field trip -even 4th grade who got caught in a downpour on the way back to school (see the last pictures). Swimming time was brief due to thunder and a downpour. Everyone came back to school drenched 45 minutes early. Nevertheless, everyone had a good time.
