Highlighting Unified Arts at SACs! St Albans City School has an amazing Unified Arts team filled with opportunities for students in all grades to learn and experience physical education, art, music, STEAM, and Health. We are excited to use the Daily Announcements to highlight Unified Arts activities at our school.
So without further ado, let us introduce two more of our Music Unified Arts teachers, Mr. Kelly and Ms. Stevens: Ms. Stevens and Mr. Kelly have the wonderful opportunity to teach students to play instruments, and to make music together! In just one year students go from knowing nothing about instruments to learning how to put instruments together, to make beautiful sounds on their instrument, to read music (which is a different language in and of itself), and to play the music they are reading. Mr. Kelly’s favorite part of learning with students is learning from all the mistakes we make as we play new music. Making mistakes is encouraged, even celebrated, in band because they create the opportunity for students to learn from them and become even better musicians. The best part of music, however, is getting to share it with other people in our community - that is, after all, what music is for! This Thursday, in fact, we will have our first live performance since the pandemic began. It will be such an exciting opportunity for the City School Bands that have worked very hard this year to prepare.
Mr. Kelly is in his fourth year teaching at City School, and previously taught instrumental music in Ohio for three years. Along with teaching Mr. Kelly also enjoys biking, hiking, reading, antiquing, and playing MarioKart with friends. He also enjoys traveling, having visited 11 countries outside the United States, two of which he traveled to just to perform. Within the United States, Mr. Kelly has traveled to 43 states and performed in 16 of them while in college.
Ms. Stevens is currently a student intern from the University of Vermont and will get her license to teach after she completes her internship. She has been working with the City School Bands for the last couple of months as a part of her degree before she becomes a band director for another school district in Vermont. In her free time, Ms. Stevens enjoys reading, thrifting, and playing video games.
