World Fit Walking Challenge

The 300+ students participating in the World Fit Walking Competition have completed over 8000 miles in the first two weeks of walking.  25 students have completed more than 100 miles (when accounting for miles from other physical activities and donated miles from family and friends).  Two students from Team Triumph have accumulated well over 200 miles.  Keep up the good work.

News from Fuel Up to Play 60

My name is Abigail. I'm in 8th grade in Dynamic Design. I am a Fuel Up To Play 60  National Ambassador and Panelist.I got to be one through filling out an application to be a Natioinal Ambassador in January.

The Fuel Up To Play 60 team emailed me in March asking me if I had any interest in being part of a team of 30 panelists who attend webinars and call-in meetings. It's really fun to be National Panelist for Fuel Up To Play 60. I get to contribute all my ideas on current events going on in this organization.  The last meeting/webinar I attended included topics ranging from a logo for Quaker Products to a new dashboard for the Fuel Up To Play 60 website. My next one is coming up and I have many thoughts and ideas I will be contributing to the conversation.

Band

Jr. Band is not rehearsing today, and there are no jr. band lessons this morning.

Could 4th grade beginning violins and cello please have a make up lesson this morning at 11.

Math Competition:  
St. Albans City vs Langrish Primary

St. Albans City School has challenged the Langrish Primary from the United Kingdom in our latest Fai-To.  Students can help defeat our opponent by playing games and completing challenges on Mangahigh.  The first school to win 5 rounds wins the Fai-to.  Any points you earn help accumulate points for our school.  Get online and practice those math skills!   

NECAP Science Testing 

Grades 4 and 8 will be taking the NECAP Science tests Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.  The schedule is as follows:

Tuesday - Session 1: 9:00-10:30, Session 2: 12:00-1:30

Wednesday - Session 3: 9:00-10:30

Make-ups will be next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, to be scheduled as needed.

Grades 4 and 8 will not attend any specials normally scheduled during testing times.

Please support your fellow Raiders by being quiet in the hallways during testing.

Band

Congratulations to the Senior Band and Jazz Band on the fantastic performance on Thursday evening!

The 5th and 6th grade Jr. Band will be presenting their spring concert tonight, at 7 in the cafeteria. All band members should be in the band room by 6:30.

Hanging flower baskets are in for the band students who participated in the fundraiser. Please make arrangements to pick them up - they are in the band hallway.

Box Tops Competition 

Have you guys forgotten about collecting Box Tops? We want to reach a goal of 4,000 more Box Tops by the end of the year, and right now we have 1,436. The more Box Tops we collect the more money your learning community will have for field trips and other necessities. Help us push toward this end of the year goal!

Eighth Grade Personal Learning Plans

Please join us on Thursday May 30th starting at 6:00 in Learning Communities with a reception in the Art Gallery from 6:30-7:30.

Listen to each student present in 2-5 minutes, their response to the prompt; ‘What is my future (aspiration, career, profession, job), what will it take to achieve it, and how has my time at St. Albans City School prepared me for my future.’

Students will be organized in their Learning Communities. There will be two sessions of speeches for each Learning Community (6:00-6:30) and (6:45-7:15). If you have a child in two Learning Communities, we will help coordinate so that you may attend both. Parents are welcome to attend one or both sessions, and we ask that parents remain for the entire session.

This is the first year that we are having students complete this performance task. We believe that helping them learn to communicate effectively will be very valuable as they emerge as young adults. Focusing them on their future will help them to see the value of their education, and help them persevere so they can reach their dreams.

Fitness Team

The team is traveling to Burlington today to compete in the UVM Fitness Competition.

Dance Tonight for Grades 4, 5 and 6

Team Triumph is hosting a dance tonight (4/19) in the cafeteria from 6-8.

Arrival and Dismissal from Dances:

Students enter through the gymnasium doors and sign themselves into the dance.

School Expectations (Safe, Achieving, Caring) remain at all evening events and that includes dances.

At the end of our dances, chaperones and staff will walk students through the building to our front lobby. We will dismiss from there.

Please be prompt for pick up as staff and chaperones need to get home too. If your student does not have a ride home, please don’t send them to our dances unless they have made arrangements before coming to the dance.

Please remember to be careful of the blueberry bushes as you are dismissed from the dance!

News from The Investigators

The Investigators had a visit from Erik Culbertson, PA from Northwestern Orthopedics.   He shared much information about bones and joints.  He brought bone models for us to observe and applied casts to two of our community members.  (He also brought a cast cutting machine!)  Being Investigators, we had many, many questions for him.

Band

Jr. Band, Jazz Band,  and the Orchestra are rehearsing today.

Tonight, the Jazz Band and the Sr. Band are having their spring concert at 7. All band members shoud be at the band room at 6:30. The Jr. Band will have their concert on Monday night. 

On Friday, the Jazz Band will be going to Fairfield Center School for the day.

School Board Meeting

News from Team USA

Last Friday members of the Team USA Ropes Course went to Montpelier and presented their project to the Vermont Principals Executive Committee. They met and collaborated with other schools as well. It appears that they will work with students from the Spaulding High School Tech Center on several projects next year. The VPA was impressed with the entire St. Albans City School Program.

Recently Mrs. Wade's Voyager WIN time students watched the short film Cain's Arcade  and made their own cardboard arcade games, which they shared with other Voyagers.

Band

The Junior Band Concert has been postponed due to athletic conflicts. It will take place on Monday May 13th at 7:00pm in the cafeteria.

Welcome to KINDERGARTEN!

St. Albans City School would like to welcome all incoming Kindergarteners (children who will be 5 before September 1^st, 2013) and their parents to the 2013-2014 school year.  You are invited to visit us in the Kindergarten on Wednesday, May 8^th from 6 pm to 7 pm.   Registration material for Kindergarten screenings will be available.  Your child’s immunization records and birth certificate are required.  For more information, call Helene Biggie at 527-0565 @ ext. 1101.

World Fit Walking Challenge

Over 300 of our students are participating in the World Fit Walking Challenge held between April 29th and June 7th.  Most of these kids are walking or running each week day and usually during WIN times.  So far students have collectively "walked" well over 4000 miles.  Miles can be accumulated by participating in almost any physical activity.

Family members and friends can be a part of this challenge, by logging on to the World Fit site and contributing some of their miles to kids in the 4th-8th grade learning communities. http://worldfit.org/activities/public/account/register/

For family and friends with kids in the younger learning communities, simply have the child report your daily miles to their teacher.

News from Renaissance

Renaissance students worked with IBM engineers to explore and investigate electrical circuits. 

• I learned that if you have a solar panel  you will get more energy based on how much surface area is showing to the light.
• I learned about electrons, electrical current, and voltage. I also learned about how the electrons move and what prevents them from moving. What prevents the electrons from moving are called insulators. The path the electrons follow when forced are called conductors. They allow easy movement of electrons through them. Another thing I learned was that if the voltage it high enough, the electricity will pass through it anyways.

• They gave advice like even though you don't like math or science you should still do it because it opens up more opportunities in the future. 

• Also they said that math and science are the two main school skills you should have to become an engineer.

6th Grade Bike Trip

Due to the predicted rain on Thursday, the 6th bike trip to The Rail Trail has been moved to Wednesday.

Band

The City School Music department will be very busy this week. On Tuesday, the 5th and 6th grade Jr. Band will be giving our spring concert at 7 pm in the cafeteria. We will be performing solo's and an assortment of band music.

On Thursday night, the Jazz Band and Senior Band will be giving their spring concert, also at 7 pm in the cafeteria.

On Friday, the Jazz Band will be traveling to Fairfield Center School to do a jazz band day with their band. We will be rehearsing all morning and giving a concert that afternoon.

Reminder:
Band Hanging Basket Flower forms are due today. Mrs. Gunter will come to band to pick them up.

Junior Band is rehearsing today at 12:15.

Green Ribbon

On June 3rd, Ms. Cavallo and the Green Ribbon Team are traveling to Washington DC to accept SACS's Green Ribbon Award. The entire week will be "Green Week" here at SACS and we will be doing all kinds of things to celebrate. 

We are asking for your help. We are trying to collect a list all the things that you, the students, have done to make this award possible. We will use this list to create a special display in the lobby for "Green Week". Please email Ms. Cavallo with anything you, or your team has done to make our school a Green School at cavalloj@fcsuvt.org.

This is a reminder that the CHOMP class ended last Tuesday, so it will not be meeting today, Tuesday, May 7.  

Today, Tuesday May 7th is the last day of Archery.  However, all other Tuesday classes will still meet next week.

SACS Award Winning Teachers!

Congratulations to Nina Dudley, Patty Pizarro and Suzi Frazier for winning the Golden Apple Award given by the Vermont Council of Special Educator Administrators. This award honors their focus on student strengths to maximize potential, creating opportunities for appropriate integration, collaboration, resourcefulness, compassion and respect for students and families. They will be going to Lake Morey on May 23rd to accept their Golden Apple.

You and your family are invited attend The Odyssey of the Mind Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday May 4th at The VFW at 353 Lake St. It's $8 for adults and $5 for kids under 10. Entertainment provided by They Smokey Newfield Project featuring our own Mrs. Gottschalk. There will be raffle baskets, a silent auction and ice cream too! All proceeds help City School's Division 2 team get to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in Michigan May 22nd-26th.

SACS Dress Code

Now that Spring is here, please take a moment to review SACS Dress Code.

Students should wear clothing that is neat, comfortable, and appropriate for learning while keeping the weather in mind.

Specific Guidelines:

• Clothing must cover stomachs, backs and undergarments, including underwear and bras.
• No halter-tops,spaghetti straps, short shirts, see through items or tank tops with straps less than two inches.
• All clothing should provide coverage so that no cleavage is showing.
• Skirts, shorts, or skorts must be as long as mid-thigh.
• any item of clothing with sexual, drug, alcohol, tobacco connotations or hate or gang related activities or messages are not allowed.

If dress is inappropriate, students will be asked to change and if a change of clothing is not available parents will be called.

Band

Make up lessons for 5th and 6th grade trombone is today at 10 am.

Field Trip

7th and 8th grade students from Codesmyths and Tech Squad are attending the 

ROOTS (Reaching Out On Technology and Sciences) event at Champlain College.


Renaissance is walking to Taylor Park to "Green Up" the community at 12:15.

News from Renaissance

Seventh grade students have started working with their buddies on their All About Me books.  Students mentor and act as an editor for second grade students during their Language Arts class.  They seem to be enjoying this opportunity, and demonstrates their leadership with younger students in the use of technology, classroom behavior, and the importance of valuing their education.

Band

Jazz Band and Orchestra will be rehearsing today.

Jr. Band will not be rehearsing at 12:15 today so Mr. M can see some more people for Jr. soloists. 

Could the 6th grade flutes and 6th grade drummers Trevor, Andoni and Andrew please come to Mr. Mehaffey at 8:30.

Could 6th clarinets and 6th saxes come to see Mr. Mehaffey at 10:45.

Team Triumph is hosting a Masquerade Dance next Friday May 10th from 6-8pm. All 4th-6th grade students are invited and encouraged to wear a masquerade mask such as the ones below. There will be a prize for the most creative handmade mask. Come and enjoy dancing, prizes, and fun!

Odyssey of the Mind is hosting a spaghetti dinner this Saturday May 4th. It is at the VFW on Lake Street from 5-8pm.  Dinners are $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for kids 10 and under.  Mrs. Gottschalks band, The Smokey Newfield Project will be playing for us all night. All proceeds help City School's Division 2 team get to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in MIchigan May 22nd-26th.  Please consider coming to this event as it will be a fun night of great food and music!
