April is Autism Awareness month. At St. Albans City School there are a variety of activities happening to make the entire community aware of autism. Recently Mrs. Nina Dudley presented information about autism to Team USA. Mrs. Dudley is one of the teachers involved with the Kaleidoscope team at the school.


School Report Night

School Report Night is taking place in the SACS Library on Thursday April 11th at 6:00pm at the beginning of the monthly School Board Meeting. If you cannot attend, the presentation will be televised with the School Board Meeting on Channel 16 Northwest Access TV. Click here for schedule. 

Last Chance for Yearbook Submissions!

Attention 8th grade parents:  This is the final reminder for baby pictures and personal messages to be included in the 2013 City School yearbook.  The deadline is tomorrow, Wednesday, April 10th.  Please have your son or daughter bring the picture and/or message to their 8th grade Language Arts teacher or Ms. Maguire in Dynamic Design.  Due to publishing deadlines, we cannot accept late submissions.

News from Renaissance

As part of our Healthy Choices Unit, Susan Hopkins spoke to Renaissance about what it is like to live with Type 1 Diabetes.  She also discussed with the students the importance of healthy eating habits and its effects on the body.  We learned that eating too many carbohydrates can raise blood sugar levels and cause long term health problems. 


SACS Wins a Silver Medal

As you may have read in the 21st Century School section of the St. Albans Messenger over the weekend, SACS has earned a Silver Medal for School Wellness. The award was given by the Health Department in partnership with the Agency of Education, New England Dairy and Food Council and the Vermont Health Education Initiative.
Way to go, SACS!

Thank you to all of the teams that participated in the Friday afternoon sing-a-long concert in the cafeteria. It was fun and loud!

Team USA wants to thank Ms. Dudley for coming in to help us better understand autism.

The City School Energy Team continues to close in on its goals. Please remember to use the shades and to shut down your computers before plugging them in and putting them in the carts.

Attention 8th Graders and Families


On Friday, May 17, all Eight Graders will be walking to BFA for Freshman Orientation. This is an annual event to introduce eighth graders to the wonders of their upcoming ninth grade year. This is always an exciting day. The students will receive a mock schedule for next year and get to meet teachers and fellow ninth graders from the other sending schools.

On Friday, lunch will be provided by BFA. Eighth Graders willbe dismissed from BFA at 2:00 P.M. and walking home. If parents choose todo so, you may make arrangements to pick students up at approximately 2:00P.M. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to give us a call.

Don't forget to get your baby pictures and personal messages in for the yearbook! The deadline is Wednesday, April 10th.  Items can be brought in to your teachers at school or emailed to maguireb@fcsuvt.org

Eighth Grade Graduation will be Thursday 6/13 at 6:00pm with a dance for seventh and eighth grade students immediately following. This is the last dance of the year and it's free of charge for all seventh and eighth grade students. There will be more details

For 5-6th grade teams: A big thank you, and I am very proud of the 5th and 6th Jr. Band for a fantastic week of rehearsals.

Sr. Band will be outside, marching this afternoon. Please bring outdoor clothing.

Dance Tonight -- Fri 4/5

Odyssey of the Mind is Hosting a dance tonight for grades 6, 7 and 8. It's from 6:30-8:30pm  in the cafeteria and it's $3 to get in. 

Arrival and Dismissal from Dances:

Students enter through the gymnasium doors and sign themselves into the dance.

School Expectations (Safe, Achieving, Caring) remain at all evening events and that includes dances.

At the end of our dances, chaperones and staff will walk students through the building to our front lobby. We will dismiss from there.

Please be prompt for pick up as staff and chaperones need to get home too. If your student does not have a ride home, please don’t send them to our dances unless they have made arrangements before coming to the dance.

News from Box Tops for Education

Hey City School! Our last collection competition went so well we decided to set an end-of-the-year school-wide goal.Our goal is 8,000 Box Tops by the last week of school.  Can we do it?!?!  We hope you've still been clipping and collecting so we can reach our goal.

This will be another opportunity for friendly competition among learning communities. Dynamic Design will keep track of total collections from each learning community.  More details coming soon!

Autism Awareness

Friday Activity- have the lights turned on low in your classroom, when the students are not expecting it, turn them on bright, and see the reaction you get.

* this simulates what it might be like for a child who has autism, as they are very sensitive to light.  This can cause headaches, stress and anxiety.

Welcome to KINDERGARTEN!

St. Albans City School would like to welcome all incoming Kindergarteners (children who will be 5 before September 1^st, 2013) and their parents to the 2013-2014 school year.  You are invited to visit us in the Kindergarten on Thursday, April 4th  and Wednesday, May 8^th from 6 pm to 7 pm.   Registration material for Kindergarten screenings will be available.  Your child’s immunization records and birth certificate are required.  For more information, call Helene Biggie at 527-0565 @ ext. 1101.

Odyssey of the Mind

SACS Odyssey of the Mind Team is trying to raise money to get to the World Finals in Michigan. They are holding two fundraisers this week. The first is a dance this Friday night for grades 6-8. It's from 6:30 to 8:30 in the cafeteria and it's $3 to get in. The second bottle drive on Saturday from 9AM-1 PM.  There will be a table set up outside of the gym and a neighborhood pick-up.

Expanded Snack Program

We are excited to announce that starting Monday April 8th, SACS is piloting the expanded snack program for six weeks for students enrolled in a SACS related after school activity. This will provide a brown bag snack to all students enrolled in afterschool activities including Drama, Athletic Club, SES Tutoring, and Open Doors. 

Conservation Note

We are proud to be a school conscience of our consumption. As such we would like to bring to attention excessive use happening with our printer named “Library Color”. To date we have gone through over $2,500. in toner for just this one printer. We would like to offer a few suggestions to make sure this amount does not double by the end of this school year.

• a color printer should never be your default printer
• Cute PDF Writer should be used as a default printer
• before clicking the command to print, always check to make sure you know what printer you are printing to
• printing a website is not expected
• if your print job is text, do not send it to a color printer
• if you need more than one copy, print one, and use the copy machine for the rest.

If you need help with any of the suggestions listed please ask for help from your Teachers, Ms. Wade, Ms. Rawding, Mr. Lyndes or Mr. Mike. We are all here to help! Together we can keep our color printing to a minimum, and still have it when we need it!

Team Triumph has Raider Pride!

Team Triumph has Raider’s pride because our team shows lots of enthusiasm and spirit during school wide activities and events. Our team takes pride in participating in all of the awesome opportunities that our school provides for us. We come to school every day because we love being here at SACS.

Information went home with your son or daughter today regarding baby pictures and personalized messages for the 2013 SACS Yearbook.  This is a great tradition for our 8th grade students.  Please look for this flyer with submission instructions.

Scanned/digital pictures or personalized messages (50 words max.) can be emailed (preferred) to Ms. Maguire, Yearbook Advisor, at maguireb@fcsuvt.org.  If email is not an option, the flyer has instructions for submitting prints and written messages.

The FIRM DEADLINE for submitting pictures or messages is Wednesday, April 10th due to publishing deadlines!

Discovery Has Raider Pride!

Discovery shows Raiders Pride by showing others that our community is part of the whole school, not just one community. Another thing that shows that Discovery has Raiders pride is our team shirts. Our shirts are Raiders shirts. Discovery thinks of SACS as one big community, has good sportsmanship and supports other teams. 

Discovery knows that, in order for our school to succeed, we have to support each other. So, if any Raider community needs a hand, they can count on Discovery to be there. Go Raiders!

News from Team Triumph

Another Fun Friday activity for the students on Team Triumph!  Students were given 1 piece of paper and a piece of tape.  They had a few minutes to construct an Easter basket with a handle.  Once all baskets were made, they went on an Easter egg hunt.

Odyssey of the Mind

News from The Explorers

2nd grader Eric played with other musicians at the Sugar on Snow party on Sunday March 23, 2013.  The event was held at the Historical Society Building and proceeds from the event benefited the historical society. As quoted in the Messenger "The tiny but talented fiddle player...Eric of St. Albans...joined the seasoned veterans with ease." WAY TO GO ERIC!!!!!

The Voyagers Have Raider Pride!

Voyagers have Raider Pride because Voyagers know that our fabulous school is helping them to get where they need to go. Raider Pride means working with all the people in our school and community to help us all grow, learn, and be a part of something specials! Go Raiders!

News from The Voyagers

Voyagers want to send out a huge 'Thank You' to the fabulous folks from IBM for the incredible presentations they brought to the Voyagers. We learned about the reflectivity of the moon and conducted some experiments involving the reflectivity of sands of differing colors. Jose, Pat, Brian, and Peter all deserve a round of applause! Students became the planets, explored their hypotheses, and had a lot of fun!

Middle School District Music Festival

Selected members of Senior Band and Orchestra are going to MVU on Friday and Saturday for the 2013 Middle School District Festival. Students participating in the festival should be at school on Friday and Saturday in the Big Gym by 8:30. A bus will bring them to MVU. The concert will be at 2:00 on Saturday at MVU.

Sharing the Dream

Thanks to Mrs. Wade and Mr. Allen, SACS was awarded the Sharing the Dream Grant. This grant will help Mr. Allen and Mrs. Wade with a new program called "Around the World in Eighty Days" . To read more about the grant and the program please click here.
