Announcements 05-04-10

Dear City School Parents and Guardians:
On the afternoon of Wednesday, May 5th, weather permitting, City School will have an Emergency Evacuation Practice Drill with our staff and students. An Emergency Evacuation would be used as a safety measure any time there is a need to remove all staff and students from the immediate vicinity of our school. Although these situations are a rare occurrence, we want our students and staff to know exactly what to do should they hear such an announcement. During this evacuation drill the students will learn where to go and how to follow our safety protocol.

Students and staff will be evacuated to the Aldis Street Compound at approximately 2:20 p.m. on May 5th. The A Session Students will board their buses at the Aldis Street location at 2:45. Parents and guardians will not be able to pick up students during this drill, between approximately 2:15 p.m. and 2:50 p.m. Any students who are not boarding the buses at 2:45 will return to the school for pick up. Students in the B Session will continue their school day until their 3:15 dismissal time.

If you have any questions or concerns about the drill, please contact me at 527-0565.

Sincerely,

Joan Cavallo
Principal

The Spring Book Fair is coming!
May 1 – 7, 2010

The SACS PTO will host our annual Spring Scholastic Book Fair from May 1 to May 7th. We are kicking the fair off early this year in the school gymnasium during the Maple Festival Pancake Breakfast. You can come on in and see the selection Saturday and Sunday (May 1 & 2) from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on those days. During the following week, you can join us in the library from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please support the book fair and help raise funds to purchase books for our children, classroom libraries, and our library. Families, teachers, and the community are invited to attend the Book Fair, featuring a fun theme: Book Fair Diner: All You Can Read!

On Thursday, May 6th, from 6-8 p.m., the Book Fair will feature a special Family Event with story read-alouds, contests, activities, refreshments & door prizes.

Special guest Clifford, the Big Red Dog, will be available to sign books, pose for pictures, and read with your child.

The Book Fair will offer specially priced books to meet every budget. We will also offer educational products, including new releases, award-winning titles, children’s classics, interactive software, adult books, and current bestsellers from more than 100 publishers.

As always, we are conducting a Community Support activity in conjunction with our book fair. During our Spring book fair, we are collecting non-perishable food items for our local food shelf. Please support this effort by sending/bringing in some items. Every student will be recognized for their donation on our “Hunger Fighters” Wall of Fame.

As always, Volunteers are truly appreciated and needed!!!! If you have any time to volunteer during the May 1-7 book fair, please contact Veronica Saffo by email at vjsaffo@comcast.net or phone 527-0081. Whether it is an hour or three, your time is a tremendous boost for our efforts! There will be two set-ups that require support (April 30 and May 2nd).

Looking forward to seeing you all at the book fair!!

Science NECAP

All 4th and 8th grade students will be participating in taking the Science NECAPs during the week of May 10th. There are a total of three sessions. The first two sessions are similar to the Fall NECAP with multiple choice and short answer test questions. The third session is a hands-on experiment where students conduct a supervised experiment and then collect, organize, and analyze their data.

The formal 8th grade City School Graduation is June 11, 2010. We are inviting families to join us 5:30-6:15 within learning communities to celebrate and honor 8th grade students. Learning Communities will give out awards, certificates and medals to recognize student success in Language Arts, Math, 21st Century, Art, Music, Band, PE Tech Savvy, etc.

Next, the formal graduation ceremony will begin in the large gym at 6:30 followed by a reception and student dance. During the formal ceremony students will wear medals indicating they received a learning community award. Also, during the graduation other scholarships and traditional awards will be presented.

We hope to see you celebrate our 8th grade students and their accomplishments on June 11th.
