Announcements 05-10-10

Congratulations to St. Albans City School for receiving a Silver Medal Award for school wellness! The awards are sponsored by Vermont’s Action for Healthy Kids, the New England Dairy Council, and the Vermont Department of Education and Health. The Fit and Healthy Kids School Wellness Awards recognize schools whose practices reflect a high priority on healthy outcomes for children. Reports have indicated that school-based physical activity may help improve students grades and test scores. GO CITY!
Some city school students and representatives will attend an awards ceremony in Montpelier on May 12th, where Governor Douglas will present the awards, and then participate in the Annual Intergenerational Wellness Walk to promote and celebrate the importance of healthy active lifestyles.

Tax season is a great time to remind families about the benefits of receiving the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Families earning up to $48,000 may be eligible to receive EITC. Families that receive this tax credit are automatically eligible for 3SquaresVT, regardless of their income or assets. Although they may receive low or no 3SquaresVT benefits, they will still be eligible for free school meals. This means that there are likely families that are over income for free or reduced price meals and 3SquaresVT that can receive free school meals if they receive EITC.

Science NECAP

All 4th and 8th grade students will be participating in taking the Science NECAPs during the week of May 10th. There are a total of three sessions. The first two sessions are similar to the Fall NECAP with multiple choice and short answer test questions. The third session is a hands-on experiment where students conduct a supervised experiment and then collect, organize, and analyze their data.

8th grade City School Graduation is June 11, 2010. We are inviting families to join us 5:30-6:15 within learning communities to celebrate and honor 8th grade students. Learning Communities will give out awards, certificates and medals to recognize student success in Language Arts, Math, 21st Century, Art, Music, Band, PE Tech Savvy, etc.

Next, the formal graduation ceremony will begin in the large gym at 6:30 followed by a reception and student dance. During the formal ceremony students will wear medals indicating they received a learning community award. Also, during the graduation other scholarships and traditional awards will be presented.

We hope to see you celebrate our 8th grade students and their accomplishments on June 11th.
