News from Team USA

Congratulations to St. Albans City School for winning their most recent Manghigh Fai-To (What is a Fai-To?) vs Millbrook Academy from the United Kingdom. This is a math competition where City School students face-off in a math battle of points.  The first school to win 5 rounds wins.  All students had to do was earn more points than their opponents by playing any of the math games and challenges.  Over the weekend our students earned more points and came away with the victory.  Some of the top contributors included Kyra C., Gabbi W., Austin T., Sam D., Jordan P., Camille G., Sophia V, Frank R., and Lonna N..  Job well done to all classes and students who took the time to participate!
As always, students have access to Mangahigh at school and anywhere they have Internet access.  St. Albans City School Mangahigh

After School Activities - Building Access

With Basketball season upon us, it is a great time to review our Building Access Protocol.  City School has been entrusted with the safe keeping of our most precious commodity, your children.  We are diligent in ours efforts to provide a safe, healthy environment for our students to work and play; in addition to protecting our communities’ investment in technology, etc.

Keeping this in mind, it is of paramount importance that we monitor who enters our building and for what purpose.  For numerous reasons, we can no longer leave doors open or unattended.   This year we have begun providing front door coverage for all of our after school and early evening activities, Monday through Friday.  There are occasional times when we have unlocked the gym doors for an event; however, these times are limited and require continual door supervision. We must insist that visitors enter through the Main Entrance of our building.  We are only as secure as everyone who works with us in this effort.

When parents, students, or staff prop open doors to allow easy or more convenient access, we are no longer a secure building (or an energy efficient building!).  We understand there are times when it would be more convenient (or necessary - i.e. handicap
accessibility) to enter through the gym doors.  We are a work in progress, and continue to review our current protocols and make adaptations, additions as necessary.
We want to provide a safe, healthy environment for our children.  We do not want to limit or cancel extra-curricular activities and events offered at St. Albans City School.  Please help us in our efforts.

When visiting our building, use the Main Entrance.  If you are attending an activity at our school, do no prop open the side doors.  (However, please do open the door for a family member or friend who is handicapped and cannot walk around.  Just make sure to shut the door tight when they are in.)  Thank you for your help.  We appreciate our community involvement and look forward to seeing you here!

Talking to Kids

Here are some tips on talking to kids about the recent events in CT.

  •  Start the conversation.
  • What does your child already know? Start by asking what your child/teen already has heard about the events from the media and from friends.
  • Gently correct inaccurate information. If your child/teen has inaccurate information or misconceptions, take time to provide the correct information in simple, clear, age appropriate language.
  •  Encourage your child to ask questions, and answer those questions directly.
  • Limit media exposure. Limit your child’s exposure to media.  Even if they appear to be engrossed in play, children often are aware of what you are watching on TV or listening to on the radio. What may not be upsetting to an adult may be very upsetting and confusing for a child. Limit your own exposure as well.
If you or your child need some help or have concerns and would like to speak to school counselor Mrs. McCarthy she can be reached at mccarthyd@fcsuvt.org or by calling the school at 527-0565.

News from Team USA

 The City School energy committee is dedicated to reducing the electric bills and the carbon footprint of our school. The committee,composed of students from each community has come up with a plan to save real money. They sat with Mr. Pelkey and he shared several ideas that he had heard at an Energy Saving Conference. The ideas that our team will work on are;

The use of the thermal shades. Each afternoon, before going home, please lower your window shade. The savings are real. If you doubtthis, please call Team USA and we can show your students how to useour Laser thermometer and prove this fact. (The air on the window is13 degrees colder than the air on the thermal shade.)  Wednesday night, after school closed, we counted over 20 windows with the shades up, and heat pouring out, all night. Please remember to utilize this simple solution. We will check every few nights and let you know who
is trying.

Team USA will use a grant that it won from IBM to purchase timers for every computer cart in the school. We will be in to install them. We have spoken with Mr. Pelkey, the Tech people at SACS and the experts at Efficiency Vermont. We can, without effecting performance and actually extending battery life, save over $400.00 per month or $3,200.00 per year!

The timers will shut off the chargers each evening at 5:00 pm, and turn them back on at 5:00 am. They will be off for weekends and vacations. If you have concerns, please contact your Energy Captains, or call Team USA.

The citizens of the City of St. Albans will be pleased that we are saving their tax dollars!

Thank you, and well done to Team Renaissance on the food drive!
