Announcements 10-20-14

News from The Travelers

Last year the travelers planted several varieties of sunflowers for
their stewardship project. The giant variety grew almost 10 feet tall!  The ones left can be seen in the garden ms outside the classrooms. We plan on replanting some seeds next year to feed the wildlife in the area.

Interesting Facts about St. Albans

The American House

The building on the corner of Lake Street (north side) and Main Street was once a hotel.  Built in 1815 by Orville Bliss, it was called “The Bliss House”, then “The Phoenix House” and later “The American House”.  Old photographs show it as a two-and-one-half story building with two porches.  Lt. Bennett Young stood in front of this porch on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 19, 1864 and fired shots in the air to signal the start of the “Vairmont Yankee Scare Party” (this is what the raiders called the St. Albans Raid).  He turned to several men on the porch and said “I am an officer of the Confederate service who is going to take the town!...I take possession of this town in the name of the Confederate States of America!”

The building was considerably altered in the 1870s.

This photo is looking north on Main Street in 1860. The American House is the building on the left with the large porches.

This photo shows the American House after it was altered in the 1870s.  It looks like the porches were removed and another story was added.  The building survived the great fire of 1895 and is now almost 200 years old!
