Interesting Facts about St. Albans

Greenwood Cemetery

Along South Main Street, south of the city center, lies Greenwood Cemetery.  It was established in either 1802 or 1804.  Many street names come from the names of families having grave plots in this 13 acre cemetery.  Many of the large monuments from the 1800s show the wealth of the local families, the monuments being made from marble with intricate carvings.  Many veterans from both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars are buried in this cemetery and their graves are marked by American flags. Some of the Civil War veterans buried here served in the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, one of the first African American units.
