Renaissance and Autism Awareness
Jason McElwain at the ESPY's with Stuart Scott

On Tuesday, June 7th, as part of our community focus to continue to learn about acceptance, autism awareness, and career opportunities, the Renaissance Community held a video presentation with Jason McElwain.

At the age of 3, Jason was diagnosed with autism. His love of basketball and "proving people wrong" gave him the drive to reach his dream of playing on the varsity basketball team at his local high school. In 2006, at the age of 19, he won ESPN's ESPY Award for "Best Moment in Sports" after a video of went viral of Jason scoring 20 points in four minutes, including 6 3-point baskets, in a game.

Since his senior year, Jason has run in 3 Boston marathons, along with dozens of other race events, including half-marathons, marathons, and ultra-marathons. Additionally, he has played on a local professional basketball team and volunteers as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Greece Athena. Most importantly, Jason has been active in raising awareness around autism and has been involved with many fundraising events.

Jason spoke with the students about living with autism, the value of perseverance, and working to make dreams a reality. His advice was straightforward: "Don't worry about what people think or say about you, just follow your dreams and do whatever it takes to make them a reality."

For snacks we have grapes
  • The average person eats eight pounds of grapes per year.
  • Grapes help minimize the risk of heart attacks because they increase the levels of nitric acid in the blood thereby reducing the risk of developing blood clots that can clog up heart blood vessels.
