BREAKFAST MENU Students may take two fruit servings with each meal. They must take at least one.

SNACKS For snacks today we have Pineapples It was not until 1694 that pine cones were first called pine cones. On arrival to the Americas, European explorers called the tropical fruit pineapples around 1664 because they resembled the pine cone. AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMMING Tuesday 11/22/16 Drama HW Club Parents Take Note: Session 2 for Open Doors will begin on December 5th, with a few exceptions - please see your student's acceptance letter for details. Letters will go home on the 22nd of November. There will be Homework Club on 11/22 for students who are already enrolled ONLY. Drama Schedule for the Next Two Weeks Drama will continue for those students already enrolled through the production on 12/1/16, with an updated schedule, see below: November 22nd: Full cast run through, 3:30-4:45. BUS AVAILABLE November 28th: Full dress rehearsal, 3:30-5:00 p.m. NO BUS, parent must transport November 29th: Full dress rehearsal, 3:30-5:00 p.m. NO BUS, parent must transport November 30th: School day performance, no after school rehearsal December 1st: Evening performance, students arrive 5:00 p.m., performance 6:30 p.m.  NO BUS

BAND Mr. Mehaffey will be supplementing lunch with some pizza today at 1:00 PM, for the Jazz Band. Jazz 'band will be rehearsing immediately after. Jr. Band is rehearsing today at 12:15 PM.

WEATHER Today's weather will be cold, primarily due to the wind.  It may be a day for indoor recess.  For those well dressed and hardy enough, the snow tubes will be pumped up for sledding.

IMPORTANT DATES Parents: Operation Happiness United Way will again be sponsoring Operation Happiness by providing a basket of food and toys for children in the family (16 and under). If you are in need of this service you can call 393-4443 Nov 22 Today from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. Travelers Parents: Culminating Event November 22nd Today. Traveler's will be having their School Family Pie Celebration culminating event in the cafeteria at 1:45 PM. Students can dress up fancy for the day! Everyone: Thanksgiving Holiday No School November 23rd - 27th. Everyone: Drama This fall's musical production, "Nutcracker" will be presented on Thursday, December 1st at 6:30 in the big gym. There is no admission cost. Please bring family and friends to see and hear a timeless classic put on by our amazing cast! Everyone: Day of Code On December 8th, we will celebrate our "Day of Code".

WHOOPING COUGH Dear SACS community, It has been brought to our attention there are multiple confirmed cases of whooping cough in Franklin county, including some in our surrounding schools. In an attempt to keep our students and staff as healthy and informed as possible, we would like to share the Department of Health’s most recent update as well as some tips to stay healthy. Like many respiratory illnesses, pertussis (whooping cough) is spread by coughing and sneezing while in close contact with others, who then breathe in the pertussis bacteria. Practicing good hygiene is always recommended to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses. To practice good hygiene you should: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Put your used tissue in the waste basket. Cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands, if you don't have a tissue. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand rub if soap and water are not available. If you have concerns that your child or yourself may have whooping cough, please contact your primary care provider.

MISCELLANEOUS AUDITIONS FOR "ANNIE" Grades 5-8 Can Participate Auditions for "Annie" will be December 7th and 8th. We will have a workshop and some auditions from 3:30 to 4:45 on Wednesday and Auditions until 6:00 on Thursday.  There will be a sign up sheet outside the music rooms soon. When you sign up, you need to get a permission slip from Ms. Hartman. Please indicate whether you will be need to ride the bus or if you can get a ride home. Plan on attending both days but if you finish your audition on Wednesday you will not need to come on Thursday. We look forward to seeing you there! Operation Happiness Renaissance students will be collecting non-perishable food for Operation Happiness again this year. Examples of great donations would be canned fruits/vegetables, dry foods like pasta, rice or cereal, peanut butter/jelly, soups or jars of baby food. Please contact us if you have questions about other donations and be sure to check expiration dates. Students will be coming to your communities on Tuesday November 22nd to deliver your community box. Starting November 28th, students will come to your community between 8:20-8:30 to collect donations. We will post daily results in the announcements to show how many donations have been collected from each community. Our goal is to collect 3,000 donations from our school. The community that collects the most items, will receive an Ice Cream Celebration. We will be collecting donations from November 28th - December 9th. Last call for the Doodle 4 Google Contest! DUE TODAY to Ms. Tagliamonte. Tuesday, November 22nd All Doodle 4 Google Designs may be delivered to Ms. Tagliamonte no later than Tuesday morning November 22 because of the snow day. They must be signed by a parent or guardian in order to be entered in the contest. Your entry will not be returned from Google so make sure to take a picture of your work before turning it in. PICTURES AND REPORTS Mannequin Challenge Miss Lavoie's 1st Grade class accepted the Mannequin Video Challenge with their Focus being Gratitude.  17 seconds long.   Link to Video   The content below was to be shown on Monday.  You may have missed it due to the snow day.  Consequently the information is repeated here: Shoe Collection Report after 5 weeks Last week we had another big week for our shoe collection contest!  At the end of week 4, we had collected 584 shoes that weighed a total of 294 pounds.   In week 5 alone we collected another 164 shoes that weighed a total of 98  pounds!  That brings us to a grand total of 744  shoes that weigh  392   pounds!   We are getting closer and closer to our goal of 1,000 shoes weighing 500 pounds!  We still have to count week 6’s collection and next week we have a 2 day week and those are the last 2 days to get shoes in for the contest to help raise money for the animals at the Franklin County Humane Society!!!  Please look in your closets, basements, bedrooms and mudrooms for any shoes that you aren’t wearing anymore and consider bringing them in as a donation!   Thank you all, you’ve been paw-sitively generous! Team Explorers Veterans Day Parade for Kaleidoscope Kaleidoscope celebrated Veterans Day in the hallways of St. Albans City School. This 20 second video gives a brief overview of the experience.  Link to Video Renaissance & Kindergarten Set Out to Grow Milkweed on School Property 7th and 8th grade students in Renaissance were paired with younger students from Mrs. Lawyer's classroom to collect Milkweed seeds and plant them 11-18-2016. Earlier in the week students from Renaissance had worked to clear the garden beds on the north side of the school from grass and weeds. The collected Milkweed seeds were planted about an inch to half inch apart and less than 1/2 an inch deep. Milkweed plants are becoming hard to find in Vermont and consequently the Monarch butterflies who depend on them are declining in population.  Our students aim to help change that situation. Students headed out to the wetlands to find milkweed. Small and large students pair off. Everyone examined the impressive seeds Students planted the Milkweed seeds in the school's North-facing garden beds. Imagination Letter Writing Students polished their writing skills in Ms. Dionne's A-WIN time.  11-17-2016 Busy Kitchen Mrs. Walsh's students helped with three kitchen projects.  Some focused on making pesto. Others made "stone soup" with various vegetable ingredients. Finally many of the students assisted in cookie making to thank the Voyagers for leading them on a walk into the city center recently. Making Pesto Cutting up parsnips for soup Using a food processor Cutting up celery for soup Cutting up sweet potatoes for soup Washing hands in the new sinks Preparing onions for soup Making cookies to thank Voyagers Local Foods Map St. Albans City School and the Abbey Food Service are striving to offer as much healthy locally supplied food as possible.  This huge map is sited on one of our cafeteria walls.  It lets us know where local foods on our menus came from in the state of Vermont.  Team Imagination is kindly maintaining the map and its information.
