PICTURES AND REPORTS

Several of our students were recognized in the Fish and Aquatic Conservation Education Highlights Journal:

Sharing our Wetlands with Biologists
The Lake Champlain Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (FWCO) hosted the northeast region’s Partners and Coastal Programs biologists training. Part of the training included a site visit and guided tour of a restored wetland on the property of the St. Albans City Elementary School in northwestern Vermont. They enlisted help from a couple of loyal volunteers who have been working with the Lake Champlain FWCO and Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge on wetland restoration for three years, and know the area very well. Those volunteers were Liam Sawyer and Bella Swan – both 7th graders!  Liam wrote a story about his experience for his school, which will be published as a blog soon, but here is an excerpt.
When I arrived at school, they told me I was giving a tour outside to some visiting biologists, so I put on boots and went out to check on the wetlands before the biologists arrived. I was concerned because earlier that summer a group of high-schoolers had stolen a lawn mower and drove through the wetlands. Luckily, the wetlands were doing great, … I started this project when I was in fourth grade so I have had a lot of experience. I thought this was really fun for two reasons. I got to be in the wetlands for an hour, and I got to show and talk to biologists from as far away as Virginia about our wetlands project and our school.

Keep your eye out for Liam Sawyer and Bella Swan, future Director of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Secretary of the Interior!
