1. Nectarines are sometimes called "shaved peaches" because their skin is smooth.

2. Contrary to popular belief, nectarines are NOT a cross between plums and peaches, they  are in fact a type of peach. Every once in a while, a peach tree mutates - the gene responsible for the fuzz is turned off, and out comes a smooth skinned nectarine.

3. Nutritionally, as all fruit, nectarines are a powerhouse.  Nectarines are a lusciously sweet snack with 2.5 tsp worth of sugar, evened out by 1.5 grams of fiber. Nectarines are a good source of vitamin C and also have good vitamin A and potassium values. They are also abundant in antioxidants.

MESSAGE FROM FARM TO SCHOOL COORDINATOR

As we transition into spring (and the snow melts) please take some time to think about stewardship garden planning and team garden planning.

As always, I am available to meet with teams, assist with planning, allocating materials and help with coordinating implementation/maintenance.

Looking forward to Spring planning,

~Heather Smith

PICTURES AND REPORTS

NAVIGATORS PRE-K
On Tuesday 3-28-2017 Ms. Rose worked with students in Ms. Audette's classroom to create Mat Man. She arrived with wooden and fiber "body parts" that could be assembled into a person as the students listened to, and sang along with, a Mat Man building ditty.  After a short snack students created their own mat men using pieces of colored paper and glue.

VOYAGERS AND TRIUMPH AT JAY PEAK
In spite of rain, students from the two communities had a good time either snow shoeing or skiing. 3-27-2017. Monday was likely to be the team's last chance for winter fun at the slopes this winter and they took it.

Fire Drill Completed
St. Albans City School holds regular safety drills.  On Monday 3-27-2017 the whole school quietly and quickly assembled outside the school for a fire drill.  The new intercom system used to announce the drill worked well.
