SNACKS
One-half cup of sliced cucumbers has just 8 calories. There are several varieties of cucumber; the most popular are English, Persian, and Pickling cucumbers. Persian cucumbers are also known as regular cucumbers with soft, edible seeds. The skin is often waxed to seal in moisture. English cucumbers are sometimes known as gourmet cucumbers, "burpless", or seedless cucumbers. This variety has seeds that are very small but do not need to be removed. Longer and thinner than regular cucumbers, this variety is usually shrink-wrapped to seal in moisture because they are not waxed. | ||

PICTURES AND REPORTS
WEEK ONE WALKING CONTEST RESULTS
The graph below shows that the Voyagers have the early lead for the walking contest around our school's walking path. Last week they completed 1064 laps and the next most active team, Discovery, completed 781. The Voyagers definitely walked lots on SBAC days where laps counted double. They also have an agreement among themselves that each person will try to complete three laps per day before engaging in general play. It may sound like a lot but it can be done and the contest only lasts a total of four weeks. One down, three to go.
TRAVELERS
The Travelers deserve special recognition for having the most laps among the 1-3 learning communities. Close behind them are the Investigators and team Imagination. The 1-3 communities get separate notice because it is tougher for students with shorter legs, and the need for closer supervision, to match the older grades for laps. Travelers' 434 laps for first through third graders is a solid performance.

NOTABLE LAPPERS
Also, almost every Voyager completed 14-15 laps
PEABODY PICTURE VOCABULARY TEST
Graduate students visited our school on Monday to help our staff test kindergarteners' vocabulary and visual skills. Students were given a series of words that they had to associate with pictures. 5-14-2018. The process was supervised by the Kindergarten special educators and assessment staff. LINK TO A NINE PICTURES BAKING WITH VOYAGERS Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Lamb taught a group of Voyagers students how to make bread on Monday morning 5-14-2018. The pictures show students using warm water and sugar to activate dried baking yeast. Salt was added and then flour was mixed into the liquid until the right consistency was achieved to allow for kneading. Making bread is a fundamental kitchen skill that the students were happy to learn. LINK TO 19 PICTURES
