FAMILIES OF 4TH AND 8TH GRADERS
On February 8th, 4th and 8th grades will take the NAEP assessment. The links below will take you to letters that explain the expectations for that measurement.

What is NAEP?
It is a Common Measure of Student Achievement

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the only assessment that measures what U.S. students know and can do in various subjects across the nation,

states, and in some urban districts. Also known as The Nation’s Report Card, NAEP has provided important information about how students are performing academically since 1969.

RISEVT VISITS
RiseVT Representative, Jessica Frost, visited Triumph, Discovery, Voyagers, Navigators, and Dreamers to connect with students through health games and to deliver rewards for achieving Bronze or higher status for classroom healthy choices. The pictures below are from Ms. Williams' classroom where students used the kickball they were given to play two games, one associated with learning the alphabet and the other a mental challenge and movement task. The students were all engaged and happy to play with Ms. Frost.  LINK TO 13 PICTURES.

UNIFIED ARTS NIGHT

We had a wonderful turnout on Tuesday evening for the annual Unified Arts night. Hundreds of students and families looked through yearbooks, examined historic pictures, watched dozens of students perform physical drumming, watched the school documentary, and saw some great short drama vignettes. These events were followed by cake for everyone in the little gym. It was a celebration of the school's 50th birthday. Check out these pictures. If you missed the documentary video the link can be found at the bottom of this daily announcement blog segment.  LINK TO 45 PICTURES OF U.A. NIGHT

JAY PEAK SKI TRIP PHOTOS
Each winter, students in the 4-6 learning communities head out for one to three ski trips at Jay Peak. Students learn the basics on a small slope at the bottom of the hill before graduating to the chairlifts and the steeper slopes. Here are pictures shared by teachers and parents from Incredibles and Discovery who went to Jay Peak on February 5th.

INTERESTING SHORT SACS HISTORY FACTS
These facts were discovered when reading articles about the beginning of St. Albans City School

Did you know….
  1. St. Albans City Elementary School was built on the Perras Farm.  The property was mostly fields of hay that was ready to harvest. The school board put an add in the messenger to sell the hay before construction began.
  2. There were delays in construction during the first winter because of a major snow storm that dumped several feet of snow on the site.
  3. Construction was also delayed because of 2 worker strikes.  Both strikes only lasted a couple of weeks.
  4. The construction bid came in under budget.  Because of that savings, one city official pushed to have a pool included in the school plans.
  5. There was a debate over the striped carpet in the building.  The contractor who put in a low bid to install the carpet did not realize that the carpet had stripes.  The stripes were more difficult to install and used more carpet because the stripes had to match up. The contractor was going to lose money and asked the board to use a lower quality padding underneath, to get back some of the money.  The board refused to make any changes.
  6. After St. Mary’s closed and Holy Angels might also close, the school board considered keeping Fairfield Street School open or continue leasing Catholic Central High School for extra space. That meant the 7/8 students would not be at the new building.  They decided to keep everyone at the new school because there were many design features specifically for the upper grades.
  7. The roof was installed in the winter which is not an ideal time because of the cold and the snow.  There were concerns because other schools, like Burlington High School, who had their roofs installed in the winter had issues with leaks.  The school board decided to cut a few holes in the roof to make sure the roof was installed properly. Of course, the holes were filled in! Sure enough, the first roof leak happened a year later.  The roof continued to leak for many years after construction until it was completely redone about 10 years ago.
  8. The fire department was called to the school on October 22, 1970, about one month after it opened. Smoke was coming out of the second floor at 8:00 a.m. because an electrical heater got too hot and melted a filter.  It did not catch on fire because the filter was made from fireproof material. There was no major damage. Luckily, there was no school for students that day because of teacher conferences.
  9. This was the first time St. Albans City School students rode a bus to school.  Students always walked to and from the neighborhood schools.
  10. It was also the first-time students were served lunch at school.  The neighborhood schools did not have a cafeteria, so students walked home for lunch and walked back to school after lunch.
  11. This was the first City School to have playground equipment to play on during recess.
  12. In 1970, St. Albans City Elementary School was the largest and most modern elementary school in the state!

*The documentary has a great story of “fishtail prints” in the concrete overhangs, that are over the outside classroom doors.

Final Announcement relating to our 50th Celebration:
If you did not make it to UA night, please, watch the video and come down to look at the old photos in the hallway by the gym and music rooms.  There are several photos from the messenger that were taken when the school opened. I bet you will recognize many of the student pictures and names.
While I was researching and reading through the Messenger articles, I made a huge discovery.  There is a time capsule that was put in behind the 1968 cornerstone! Dewey and Shapiro sealed the capsule behind the cornerstone during the school’s Dedication Ceremony on December 27, 1970.
Mrs. Lamb thought there might be something back there.  She has an amazing memory! We need to do some research and planning on how to safely remove the stone.  In 2020 the plan is to remove the stone and recover the artifacts. I wonder what they would have kept for us to find 50 years later?  We will add some of our own 2020 artifacts to what is already there, before returning the capsule to rest for the next 50 years. Think about what we should put in a time capsule for future students to discover!
Thanks for reading!

ST. ALBANS CITY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY VIDEO (30 minutes long)
This video tells the story of why St. Albans City School was built. Students narrated the video in which a dozen community members, former students, and former staff members talk about the 1960s and early 1970s. Thanks to everyone from the historical society to members of this school and community who contributed to this project.
