PICTURES AND REPORTS

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST JR. 4-11-2019
In the Spring the older students from our school put on a play. This year Beauty and the Beast Jr was selected. The first performance of this play was given to the students and staff on Thursday morning 4-11-2019. There will be additional performances on Friday evening (6:00 PM) and on Saturday (1:00 PM).  Ms. Brown kindly shared the photographs she took of the first performance.  LINK TO 121 PICTURES

SACS STUDENTS ATTENDED THE VERMONT ANNUAL SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL MEETING
Roughly 80 people from all over the state attended the annual meeting held at the Barre Granite Museum to brainstorm ways of promoting walking and biking. They talked about how to install more sidewalks, bike paths and people-friendly road infrastructure wherever it is needed. Franklin County was well represented at the meeting with a contingent of eight people, three of whom came from St. Albans City School.

Students Tara Ditch and Max Concepcion have been helping lead one of our school's Walking Wednesday routes and consequently, they were chosen to represent the school at the meeting.  MORE WALKING WEDNESDAY STUDENT VOLUNTEERS ARE WANTED. see Mr. Craib if interested.

TESTING OUT ELECTRIC BIKES/E-BIKES at the meeting
One of the coolest experiences our students had was learning about electric assist bikes. An information session explained how becoming an owner of these kinds of bikes helps Vermonters minimize use of their cars or can eliminate the need for a car altogether. E-bikes can be ridden in the winter with special studded snow tires. Tara is shown riding an xtracycle that can handle hundreds of pounds of weight on the back with ease, even going uphill.

The test bikes at the meeting were pedal assist bikes where once you start pedaling you get motorized assistance going forward from slight help to the motor doing all the work. It is up to you to decide as a rider how much help you want.  The bikes tend to cost between $1500 and $5000 each. This sounds like a lot until you realize it costs about $8000/year to own and maintain a car. Biking is cheaper and healthier.

Sample pictures of what can be done with these bikes.
Local Motion -the group that owns the bikes loans them to Vermont towns so that people can test ride them before deciding whether or not to buy their own e-bike. We are hoping that the Library (or some other organization) here in St. Albans can host some of these bikes for a free check out sometime this summer.

EXPLORERS TRASH COLLECTION
The Explorers walked the school path and picked up lots of trash and recyclables. Thank you for tidying school property!
