April is Carrot Month Orange You Glad it's Time for Carrots? You may have recognized that carrots have a distinct, herbaceous leaf. That is because the carrot is a member of the parsley family (Umbelliferae). Other members of the family include species such as parsnip, dill, cilantro, caraway, coriander, poisonous hemlock, and many more. First cultivated in 900 CE, carrots have progressed a long way. In fact, the first edible carrots were white, purple, and red in color. The classic orange carrot came about through selective breeding and possible gene mutation. To learn more about carrots, check out the World Carrot Museum to find anything you've ever wanted to know about carrots! |
