Interesting Facts about St. Albans
Main Street
The road that is now “Main Street” was laid out in 1795 as the “Post Road”. It was laid out with a width of ninety feet which was wide for those days. At first, growth occurred at the south end of town but in 1793, St. Albans was selected as the “shire town” (county seat) of Franklin County. This decision meant that public buildings would be constructed near the town center which is located at the park. Many businesses were located along Main Street from Stebbins Street north to Hoyt Street. There were banks and stores selling groceries, shoes, clothing, medicine, hardware, books and jewelry, and the offices of doctors, dentists and lawyers. By 1859, there were fifteen dry goods and grocery stores in this area.
View of Main Street looking north about the time of the St. Albans Raid (1860s)-
notice the wooden sidewalk along the park. Most of the buildings in this picture burned down in the Great Fire of 1895.
More entries to come highlighting the businesses along Main Street in the 1800s!
When you come to lunch on Tuesday, you will notice some changes as you go through the line. The registers will now be placed AFTER the fresh fruit and veggie bar ensuring that all children take fresh fruit and/or vegetables making their meal a complete meal.
Also, there is a new PLU sticker challenge! Be your stickers don't end up and compost and let's find out the most popular letters for first names at SACS!
