There were also two large Catholic Schools in St. Albans City. Students paid tuition to
attend Holy Angels School and St. Mary’s School.

Holy Angels School on Lake Street

Students in grades 1 through 8 came from all over Franklin County to attend Holy Angels
School. After 8th grade, they went to Catholic Central High School, which is where Town
School is today.

Holy Angels and Elm Street were right next door to each other. Former students tell
stories of the fence that separated the two schools and kids were not allowed to socialize
or play together during recess. Many of the Holy Angels students had neighborhood friends
that went to Elm Street School and they would always play together after school.

St. Mary’s School on Fairfield Street

St. Mary’s had two buildings. The lower grades were in the smaller building which was
located where the church parking lot is today. Classes were quite large and taught by nuns.
One former student noted that in 1958 her 1st and 2nd grade class had 52 students with one
nun for a teacher. There was no playground or gym. Students played outside in a paved area.

The upper grades were in a larger building on the other side of Fairfield Street, which backed
up to St. Mary’s Hospital and BFA. Initially St. Mary’s was a grade 1 – 12 school. They later
moved the high school students to Catholic Central High, in the Town. This building did have
a gym and an auditorium which doubled as a play space.

After St. Mary’s School closed, both the buildings were torn down. St. Mary’s built a new
building on the Fairfield property.

Like all the St. Albans neighborhood schools, students walked home every day for lunch.
They had one hour to walk home, eat, and walk back to school.

Approximately 540 City students and 160 Town students attended Holy Angels School,
St. Mary’s School and Central Catholic High School.
