EVENTS AND NOTICES

FAMILIES OF 4TH AND 8TH GRADERS
On February 8th, 4th and 8th grades will take the NAEP assessment. The links below will take you to letters that explain the expectations for that measurement.

What is NAEP?
It is a Common Measure of Student Achievement

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the only assessment that measures what U.S. students know and can do in various subjects across the nation, states, and in some urban districts. Also known as The Nation’s Report Card, NAEP has provided important information about how students are performing academically since 1969.

UNSAFE RAILROAD CROSSINGS SIGHTED IN RECENT WEEKS
Sometimes trains are parked across Elm Street when students want to cross. No matter how long the train sits there, and no matter how tempting it is, don't crawl under the rail cars or over the train car connectors.

  • You could be hurt or killed if the train started moving
  • The police department told us this activity is a crime.

Thank you for being patient until the train passes.

YOUTH RISK BEHAVIOR SURVEY (YRBS)
Grades 6-8
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Our school is taking part in the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) . This was developed in 1991 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is sponsored by the Vermont Department of Health and Agency of Education. The YRBS gathers information about health risk behaviors of 6th through 12th grade students. Schools, communities, and state agencies will use the results of the survey to evaluate programs, plan new programs and to secure future funding. We are planning to administer the survey to our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students on January 30, 2019 and January 31, 2019. If you would like to see the survey, a copy is available to view in the School Counseling office. If you do not want your child to participate in the survey, please complete the opt out form and return it to Kristen Hersey in the School Counselor’s Office. Copies of the opt out form were mailed home and are also available to download here. LINK TO OPT OUT FORMForms must be returned by January 28th, 2019.

8TH GRADERS
BFA PARENTS NIGHT AT ST. ALBANS CITY SCHOOL
Preston Randall, Director of Guidance, will be coming to City School to discuss the transition from 8th to 9th grade- talking a little bit about BFA, giving an overview of the paperwork that students and families are required to fill out (academic and elective course selection), and answering any questions. For students and families who are unable to attend- no fear! We will be handing out and going over paperwork in classes, as well. Everyone will get what they need.

Tuesday, February 12th
6:00 to 7:00 PM. Location: Library

TURNIP SOUP TASTE TEST
Taste tests in the cafeteria are an effort to widen food experiences for our students. On
Thursday, 1-17-2019, Angus Baldwin, a Jeffersonville root vegetable farmer, came to
our cafeteria and handed out small cups of turnip soup samples. One of the Abbey
chefs, Jason, had created a delicious soup with Angus' turnips and some cheesy dairy
products. Hundreds of students gave the soup samples a try, with most really liking the
experience. Thank you to all the brave students and staff who gave the samples a try.
We hope to see Angus' produce and this soup become a feature of our winter menus.

SACS 50th ANNIVERSARY HISTORY

On July 26, 1968 the newspaper headlines read:
St. Albans to Build the Largest Graded School

Construction of the new school would close five old grade schools in the city, all on
inadequate sites. (Church Street school, Elm Street School, Barlow Street School,
Messenger Street School, Fairfield Street School). The building would be situated in the
City with the large playground and recreation area in St. Albans Town.

The school will have 59 general classrooms, an arts area, multi-use room (the small gym),
learning center (the library), general shop (now the fitness room), homemaking suite
(Mrs. Lamb’s Family Consumer Science room) and gymnasium with stage facilities. In
addition, it will have four special education rooms.

The building will cost $3.3 million dollars, will open with an enrollment of 900 students and
have a capacity of 1,000 students.

LOST AND FOUND
Lots of lost and found this week.  The brown jacket has the initials RB in it.  These items are located at the top of the stairs above the main lobby.  There is also a box of gloves/mittens that are missing their match.   Current weeks lost and found is downstairs.
