This summer a small cohort of teachers and students came to St. Albans City School for Open Doors programming, tutoring, and a humanities camp. In addition, a Convocation programming group assembled to film their work for the on-line convocation ceremony to be held in August. Everyone practiced social distancing, constant hand washing, and staying within specified classrooms and small pods of people. Meals were delivered to their classrooms or carried with them on off-site field trips. We practiced the many procedures that we will be using when we all return in September. This experience helped us feel very confident that we can create a safe and welcoming environment for our school family. This short video will share our student's view of the safety and joy they felt this summer.
Note: Students and staff were allowed to remove their masks outdoors when properly social-distancing.

Six pods (separate classrooms) of students were instructed over a period of two weeks in classrooms adjoining the library space. The instructors took students outside for regular breaks and learning experiences.
Dancers practiced over eight days in a large classroom space next to the cafeteria patio.

CLiF Books: https://photos.app.goo. gl/76AyHFZFx7punK6PA
Each summer the Children's' Literature Foundation (CLiF) provides students participating in public school summer programming with free award-winning books. Usually, a well-established author comes to St. Albans City School to read to students and to hand out books. This summer, there was no author visit and our summer programming coordinator, Ms. Beck-Bryant, handed out the books instead.

Each summer the humanities camp dives deeply into a topic that would be interesting and relevant to students. Last year, there was a focus on the subject of child labor, past and present. This year the subject of focus was equity and particularly racial equity. Guest speakers came to guide talks and relevant books and articles were read.
Gardening and Chickens: https://photos.app. goo.gl/vQroKvAHWckbnrwx7
This group spent four days learning about, and caring for, chickens. They also tackled the weed-clogged St. Albans City School market garden and flower beds surrounding the school. Weeds were removed and plants seeded. Thanks to their efforts, there will be garden produce to harvest in the Fall when students return to school.

A fresh group of student volunteers from the Maplerun school district came to St. Albans City School to create a student-voice convocation performance for August 2020. They met four times over two weeks. The group fine-tuned their script and filmed their performance. A range of district staff and students guided their work.
