NAVIGATORS - LAWYER & LAIDMAN

The kindergarten classroomS next door to Ms. Dupont did the same thing. They headed out for a lesson about apples and had the experience of picking apples from the school’s orchard.  The trees here were planted seven years ago by 7th and 8th graders who wanted kindergarteners to have the experience of picking and eating apples grown right here at school.  Ms. Laidman and Ms. Lawyer had the students use a few of the apples for printing art work.  Link to 38 Pictures https://photos.app.goo.gl/ULBatMsxUFenNVw79

HARVEST OF THE MONTH

Every month the cafeteria tries to serve in-season locally grown foods. This month kale is the celebrated vegetable.

October | Kale

As the nights grow colder and the temps start to dip below freezing, many will turn to this tried and true hardy, frost-resistant crop. Kale can withstand temperatures as low as 10 degrees, and it even gets sweeter after a frost! The leafy plant originated in the Mediterranean and became a popular crop because it is easy to grow, inexpensive, and can help desalinate the soil. However, after its introduction to the United States in the 19th century, kale was mostly used as decoration. (those curly leaves ARE beautiful!) In the 1990s, it finally rose in popularity as the highly nutritious, edible vegetable we love today. What makes kale so good for you? It is a natural source of fiber, antioxidants, calcium, vitamins C and K, and iron.
