EVENT(S) St. Albans City School Celebrates Computer Science Week Find out what this means by watching this Short Video |
PICTURES NAVIGATORS PRE-K - RANKIN Ms. Rankin came into Ms. Emmons’ classroom to introduce her PreK students to the fundamentals of programming. In this STEAM class, students each received a laminated sheet with pictures of some familiar animals. Ms. Rankin provided instructions such as, move your robot (a small pom pom) two steps forward and make the sound of the animal you land on (example: cat = meow). After giving a range of gradually more complicated movement instructions and listening to the correct sounds, she then asked each student to make up their own robot instructions for the class to follow. In this STEAM class students essentially learned about creating programming instructions that result in specific actions, similar to what would happen with computer cocing. Link to 23 Pictures. ADVENTURERS PRE-K - KOSKI Ms. Koski’s made cinnamon-scented air fresheners with her students. By combining Elmer's glue, apple sauce, and copious amounts of cinnamon, the students were able to make a chocolate-colored dough. Each child received a ball of this dough to roll out on wax paper. They then used cookie cutters to make the shapes of their air fresheners. These fresheners were set aside to dry for at least two days before strings will be added to them for easy hanging. Mr. Brown has been stocking and monitoring it daily. It is well used as many people notice the library on their way into the Aldis Hill and Hard’ack trails. Mr. Brown welcomes anyone to borrow a book or to place books into the library that they wish to share with others. The library box contains books suitable for any age group. Mr. Brown says there are at least four of these little libraries around the city.
Here are a couple of pictures of another Little Free Library located on Pearl Street near Walnut. The library is on Nancy Lavigne's property. It was funded by current and retired teachers after being suggested by Ms. Joy Walsh and Ms. Kathy DeBari. It was built by Kathy's husband Tom Derenthal. Mr Derenthal and Joe Walsh, Joy's husband, installed it on Pearl Street, and Mrs. Debari stocked it with donated books from former librarian, Mrs. Wade. Anyone is free to take books, and may leave one in exchange.
