PICTURES AND NEWS

ARBOR DAY APPLE TREE - TEAM USA

An apple tree was planted in our orchard by USA students on Friday, April 30th, 2021. First, a little backstory is needed about our orchard.

In 2013 St. Albans City School decided to establish an orchard next to our gardening spaces. 7th and 8th Graders from Renaissance and USA dug holes and planted apple and pear trees that they hoped would provide fruit for 2013 kindergarteners to harvest in their final years at school. That wish came true earlier than anticipated with small harvests possible from 2016 onwards.

2- minute long video (a good one to watch)

In 2015 students from Team Discovery planted an additional five apple trees at the western end of the bus loop. These bore fruit in 2019 and 2020 although one tree died for unknown reasons and another was slightly damaged with a weed whacker.

These pictures show the trees being planted by our first farm to school coordinator, Ms. Heather Smith, the tree supplier, and the 2015 Discovery Students.

On Tuesday, April 27th, 2021, a number of Team USA students removed the dead apple tree and dug the hole needed to accommodate a new apple tree.

On Friday, April 30th, 2021, St. Albans City Mayor Tim Smith and City Tree Warden, David Southwick, joined St. Albans City School 8th grade students and teachers, Jeff Rouleau and Rusty Branon to plant a Sweet Sixteen apple tree. This new tree was paid for with an Arbor Day grant that Mr. Southwick applied for on behalf of the City and School. Students learned the history of Arbor Day from Mr. Southwick, Mayor Smith, and Mr. Rouleau. They also learned how to prepare the site for the tree with a Vermont Organics soil amendment and how to care for the tree over time.  Link to 12 Pictures from the planting.

Mr. Southwick told a story about how, as a 5th grader over 50 years ago, he helped plant trees on Arbor day with his father. He still feels pride in that work. In his current position, as a tree custodian for the City, he oversees the care of over 1700 trees with more trees planned for planting. He noted that all the students who took part in the orchard plantings at City School over the years can feel a sense of ownership and pride in their work. Thanks to their digging and planting contributions, generations of future St. Albans City School students will be enjoying apples and pears grown right here on the property.

ROLLER SCOOTER BASKETBALL - JARVIS
Ms. Jarvis created a fun and challenging game of basketball while seated on roller scooters. Students had to pull themselves forward with their feet while trying to gain control of the ball and make shots. The activity required considerable use of all muscles. Core muscle strength was definitely helpful for any sustained participation. The Pictures came from Discovery, Voyagers, and Triumph 5th graders. There are two 7 second long video clips in this photo set that give a good idea of what the action was like.  Link to Pictures and Video Clips.  April 29th and May 3rd.

VerMoney (5th-8th)- One of the best things we can do for young people is to give them the skills and knowledge they will need in life, including financial literacy. Teaching students financial concepts early can positively influence how they manage their finances throughout their lives. This curriculum helps young people reflect on the differences between wants and needs and engages them in making choices about money.

Movie Education (5th-8th)-What kind of movies do you like? Animated? SciFi? Sports? Super Heroes? We got it! What do you like in a movie? Storyline? Special effects? Soundtrack?
