ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 11th

LETTER TO FAMILIES FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

This letter is being sent out in paper format as well. Families, please note the urgent request for information at the bottom of the letter.

Dear St. Albans City School Families,

We hope your family has had a wonderful summer. It was great to have so many students and staff take part in our summer camps. Unfortunately, COVID 19 continues to impact us all in so many ways. Many things are and will be different this year, as they were last year. One thing that will go back to normal is that all children k-8 will attend school in person 5 days a week. PreK will attend 4 days. The early dismissal that was on Fridays will now move to Wednesday. We have also changed our first day of school so that rather than a half day, it will be a regular, early dismissal, Wednesday.

The first day of school is Wednesday, August 25th. This year we are again providing a staggered schedule to maximize safety. Walkers, bikers, and buses will arrive at 7:30 and leave at 1:40 Wednesday (2:40 Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Friday). Students that arrive by car will arrive at 7:45 and leave at 1:45 Wednesday (2:45 Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Friday). The same schedule will serve all students PreK-8th grade. We will again use all three sides of our building for family drop-off and pick-up. Our full-day PreK does not offer school on Wednesdays, so their first day will be Thursday, August 26th.

To welcome back our families, we will hold an Outdoor Open House on Tuesday, August 24th from 5:00-6:00. This year students will again enter the school through the outside door linked to their classroom. We hope that our Outdoor Open House will allow families to feel comfortable knowing where their child will be for the year, and to get to meet the teachers they will have.

We wish we could share all of the expectations for this year, but we are still waiting for guidance from the state and district. What we can tell you is that we will be carrying forward some of the strategies that were highly successful last year, regardless of state guidance. Students will have an assigned station. This is where they will keep their belongings and where they will work. Stations are 3 feet from other student stations. The school will provide all necessary school supplies, parents are not being asked to provide these. These supplies are assigned to a child in their personal ‘toolbox’ and not shared. We are asking parents to provide a backpack this year. Students will be able to use lockers and cubbies during the day, and these will be emptied each night. These strategies were all highly successful last year and well received by students and staff. We also had a much smaller lost and found and students reported feeling more comfortable.

When we get more guidance, we will reach back out. Until then, we need your help with making sure that the information for your children and family is up to date and that we have accurate busing information. Please look at the information sheet with this letter and correct it if needed then sign and return. If no changes are needed then just sign it as is and return it. Also, please fill in the busing information sheet - this information about students that ride the bus and students that will walk or get dropped off, will help inform our bus routes and the number of buses we will need. This information can then go in the enclosed stamped envelope. We appreciate having you get this back to us quickly.

We are so excited to have our students and families back with us for another school year. We promise to continue to share the joy and experiences from each day through our Daily Announcements.

We remain a Raider Strong Community. We’ve got this!

Thank you,

Joan and Stacie

GEOCACHING ON HARD’ACK AND ALDIS HILL - WIGHT, MARRIN, KELLY

Today (Tuesday, August 10th) we hiked on Aldis Hill, better known as Hard'ack.  Students used the Garmin devices with longitude and latitude coordinates to find geocaches.  Some were registered geocaches and others were planted by Ms. Wight.  When students returned to school they were able to collect S.W.A.G. (Stuff We All Get). Link to 4 Pictures

CANOEING AND FISHING CAMP - CIOFFI & ROULEAU

The Canoeing and Fishing Group visited Arrowhead Lake on Monday, August 9th.  We had a great time exploring under the Georgia High Bridge and the marsh areas of the lake.  Plenty of birds, fish and turtles were observed. 8-9-2021. Link to 6 Pictures.

A few pictures from Shipyard Beach in Highgate Springs.  Students canoed and fished during this windy day.  They also observed some wildlife including frogs, fish and a bald eagle.  This was a refreshing trip for a hot day! 8-10-2021.  Link to 6 Pictures
