LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL January 24, 2022 Dear St. Albans City School Families – Thank you for being so supportive and flexible as we navigate this pandemic. It is unreal that we are approaching two years. Our families have been so responsible to keep children home when sick and to support us when we need to quarantine a room. Our children are also flexible and roll with the COVID restrictions while still finding ways to experience joy at school and learn through disruptions. As you are aware, COVID cases are increasing in number. Today we are writing to you to share how we will now make sure that you are aware of COVID-19 cases in our school that may impact your child. Currently we are emailing and calling each family affected. As cases increase, this will not always be feasible. We will try to reach out individually with email going forward. If you need to update your email address please contact Desiree Stevens, dstevens@maplerun.org. At all times, we will give you the control so that you can keep yourself informed. Each day we will update this letter to include all active quarantines in our school. It is open for our school community to see. A link will appear in the COVID update section each day. The letter explains what you need to do based on your family vaccination status. If your family will require test kits, we ask that you call the front desk (802-527-0565 ext.0) and they will have them available for pickup. While the district test to stay is ending today, if testing your child is challenging, we will help by testing them here at school. We will reach out if your child tests positive. We want to keep our school family safe and in school, and we are ready to do all that we can to support those goals. As always communication is important. If you need us, we are here. Thank you for your continued support throughout this school year. We remain an amazingly resilient, Raider Strong School Community. Joan and Stacie |

PICTURES INCREDIBLES' CIVIL RIGHTS NEWSPAPER In Ms.Mangis' class we did a block of learning about Civil rights. In this block we learned about a bunch of things that happened during the Civil rights movement. Each student in the class wrote a report on someone or a place where something happened. Some students have written about Rosa Parks, The Freedom Riders, MLK, and Bill Russell. The reason we wrote this is because of Martin Luther king day. 6th Graders. INDOOR RECESS Many of the recent school days at St. Albans City School have been bitterly cold. This has meant that recess has been held indoors and in the open spaces of each learning community. The Incredibles are shown jumping rope and playing corn-hole. TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM Once again, Trout-in-the-Classroom has partnered with Team USA to hatch, nurture and release brook trout in local waterways. Other schools in our district (Town and Fairfield) are doing the same. The mutual goal of this organization, and schools around Vermont, is to engage students in helping our state conserve, protect, and restore coldwater fisheries. Over the next four months, USA students will raise their trout from eggs to fingerlings. When they reach the right size, the USA students will study stream habitat and then carry the trout to a safe waterway to release them.
In recent days, the trout have hatched from eggs. They are being kept in a dark, insulated tank with refrigerated water - mirroring their natural habitat in frozen-over waterways at this time of year. Eventually, the larval fish will be exposed to more and more light and warmer water temperatures before their release. Video Clip of the Eggs (13 seconds) Video Clip of the Trout Larval Fish. Clip 1 (15 seconds). Clip 2 of the Trout Larval Fish (5 seconds). Team USA will be updating us in the months ahead as the hatchlings progress. PINEWOOD DERBY COMING TO 7TH & 8TH GRADE LEARNING COMMUNITIES Some of you may have noticed the impressive wooden structures in the hallways outside of Teams Renaissance and USA. These are the gravity-powered race courses for the pinewood derby competitions that will take place in a few weeks. Right now students are researching how to build pinewood cars that minimize energy loss and maximize speed on the race courses. Next week they will start building their cars. Finally, a week later, they will have a chance to test their cars and race each other. We will post updates on the events over the weeks ahead. NAVIGATORS MORNING MEETING - LAWYER After various morning meeting activities, the kindergarten students performed several calming and breathing exercises. These were led by the students whose turn it was to select and guide the exercises. TRAVELERS 1ST GRADE TWINS |
