PICTURES 7th & 8th GRADE BASKETBALL TEAMS VS. STAFF REPORT FEBRUARY 16TH, 2022 After Dismissal on Wednesday afternoon our older students took on a mixed team of teachers and staff members. The girls played from 2:00 to 2:30 and the boys played from 2:30 to 3:00. There were frequent substitutions on the student and staff sides so that the pace of the games could be kept intense. Both the students and staff put a lot of heart into the friendly competition. To boost the experience to another level, many staff and few students dusted off their cheerleading skills and urged the players to perform at their best. The cheerleaders also put on a great half-time performance. In addition, a band made up of teachers and students played vigorously at key points during the game. Quite a few teachers came to spectate and a huge amount of fun was had by all that were present. This means that you used up their yolk sac and are now looking for food. To do that they “swim up” to the surface. I took the video from far away because they swim back down to protect themselves when they experience my shadow from over head. They are all quite active now and swimming around quite a bit. They are each about 3/4 of an inch long and they are starting to show their stripes on their sides. Link to 13 Second Video. RAIDERS ACTS OF KINDNESS CAMPAIGN If you see any Kindness posters around the halls please take a tab and do what it says so we can spread Acts of Kindness around the school. This is for National Kindness Day on Feb 17, 2022. This will last until Friday, February 18, at 12:00 pm. This is a test to see how many Acts of Kindness occur at SACS. We ask if you complete or witness an Act of Kindness then fill out one of the Kindness tickets and drop it off at the library. Tickets can be found in the library. There will be a random drawing for a prize to be determined (possibly popcorn, ice cream, etc) We hope to see an increase in Kindness and maybe help us plan for another Acts of Kindness week in the future. |

BLACK HISTORY MONTH Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus and sparked a boycott that changed America. Harriet Tubman helped more than three hundred slaves escape the South on the Underground Railroad. Shirley Chisholm became the first black woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. The lives these women led are part of an incredible story about courage in the face of oppression; about the challenges and triumphs of the battle for civil rights; and about speaking out for what you believe in--even when it feels like no one is listening. Andrea Davis Pinkney's moving text and Stephen Alcorn's glorious portraits celebrate the lives of ten bold women who lit the path to freedom for generations. Includes biographies of Sojournor Truth, Biddy Mason, Harriet Tubman, Ida B.Wells-Barnett, Mary McLeod Bethune, Ella Josephine Baker, Dorothy Irene Height, Rosa Parks, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Shirley Chisholm. In One Crazy Summer, eleven-year-old Delphine is like a mother to her two younger sisters, Vonetta and Fern. She's had to be, ever since their mother, Cecile, left them seven years ago for a radical new life in California. But when the sisters arrive from Brooklyn to spend the summer with their mother, Cecile is nothing like they imagined. While the girls hope to go to Disneyland and meet Tinker Bell, their mother sends them to a day camp run by the Black Panthers. Unexpectedly, Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern learn much about their family, their country, and themselves during one truly crazy summer. Beach-loving surfer Alberta has been the only Black girl in town for years. Alberta's best friend, Laramie, is the closest thing she has to a sister, but there are some things even Laramie can't understand. When the bed and breakfast across the street finds new owners, Alberta is ecstatic to learn the family is black—and they have a 12-year-old daughter just like her. Alberta is positive she and the new girl, Edie, will be fast friends. But while Alberta loves being a California girl, Edie misses her native Brooklyn and finds it hard to adapt to small-town living. When the girls discover a box of old journals in Edie's attic, they team up to figure out exactly who's behind them and why they got left behind. Soon they discover shocking and painful secrets of the past and learn that nothing is quite what it seems. When Little Mae was a child, she dreamed of dancing in space. She imagined herself surrounded by billions of stars, floating, gliding, and discovering. She wanted to be an astronaut. Her mom told her, "If you believe it, and work hard for it, anything is possible.” Little Mae’s curiosity, intelligence, and determination, matched with her parents' encouraging words, paved the way for her incredible success at NASA as the first African American woman to travel in space. An important book for readers of all ages, this beautifully illustrated and engagingly written volume brings to life true stories of black men in history. Among these biographies, readers will find aviators and artists, politicians and pop stars, athletes and activists. The exceptional men featured include writer James Baldwin, artist Aaron Douglas, filmmaker Oscar Devereaux Micheaux, lawman Bass Reeves, civil rights leader John Lewis, dancer Alvin Ailey, and musician Prince. The legends in Little Legends: Exceptional Men in Black History span centuries and continents, but each one has blazed a trail for generations to come. Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden were good at math…really good. They participated in some of NASA's greatest successes, like providing the calculations for America's first journeys into space. And they did so during a time when being black and a woman limited what they could do. But they worked hard. They persisted. And they used their genius minds to change the world. In this beautifully illustrated picture book edition, we explore the story of four female African American mathematicians at NASA, known as "colored computers," and how they overcame gender and racial barriers to succeed in a highly challenging STEM-based career. |
