Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)

Grades 6-8

Dear Caregivers:

Our school is taking part in the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). This was developed in 1991 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is sponsored by the Vermont Department of Health and Agency of Education. The YRBS gathers information about health risk behaviors of 6th through 12th grade students. Schools, communities, and state agencies will use the results of the survey to evaluate programs, plan new programs and to secure future funding. We will administer the survey to our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students on February 22nd. If you would like to learn more about the survey or see a copy it is available to view here. If you do not want your child to participate in the survey, please complete the opt out form and return it to Kristen Hersey in the School Counselor’s Office. Copies of the opt out form were sent home with students and are also available to download here. Forms must be returned by February 20th.

BOOKS TO CONSIDER READING IN THE LIBRARY

Curious about Audiobooks at Our School? - Click on this link.

The St. Albans City School Library honors Black History Month with a curated booklist of recent works that examine the Black experience. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in history. These books will honor and highlight powerful stories and can be found in our school library today!

Take a . . . journey through Black History with dozens of inspiring biographies for kids. From the queens and pharaohs of ancient Egypt to modern-day scientists, athletes, and journalists, discover the lives of black leaders and role models throughout history with fifty-one brief . . . biographies of inspiring figures from Africa, the United States, and around the world. Learn about how these . . . individuals followed their passion, created lasting change, and paved the way for generations of future leaders

Myths! Lies! Secrets! Uncover the hidden truth about the Underground Railroad and Black Americans' struggle for freedom. Perfect for fans of I Survived! and Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales.

Before the Civil War, there was a crack team of abolitionists who used quilts and signal lanterns to guide enslaved people to freedom. RIGHT? WRONG! The truth is, the Underground Railroad wasn't very organized, and most freedom seekers were on their own.
