PICTURES WINTER BAND CONCERT On Tuesday, February 21st, a large gathering of musicians, their families and St. Albans City School staff met in the big gym for a concert. Fifth through eighth graders showcased their brand-new or more polished musical skills over a 1 ½ hour time period. It was inspiring to hear their performances and to see how many students have chosen to become musicians. Mr. Kelly and Mr. Charpentier, the two main instructors, were proud of their students participation and abilities. Public access TV recorded a video that will be edited and made available for viewing in the coming weeks. Photos were taken of many of the students, assuming they were visible from the sidelines among tight orchestra and band groups and amid many tall music stands. It would be easier if King could talk with his best friend, Sandy Sanders. But just days before he died, Khalid told King to end their friendship, after overhearing a secret about Sandy-that he thinks he might be gay. "You don't want anyone to think you're gay too, do you?" But when Sandy goes missing, sparking a town-wide search, and King finds his former best friend hiding in a tent in his backyard, he agrees to help Sandy escape from his abusive father, and the two begin an adventure as they build their own private paradise down by the bayou and among the dragonflies. As King's friendship with Sandy is reignited, he's forced to confront questions about himself and the reality of his brother's death. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was only 25 when he helped organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott and was soon organizing black people across the country in support of the right to vote, desegregation, and other basic civil rights. Maintaining nonviolent and peaceful tactics even when his life was threatened, King was also an advocate for the poor and spoke out against racial and economic injustice until his death—from an assassin's bullet—in 1968. With clearly written text that explains this tumultuous time in history and 80 black-and-white illustrations, this Who Was? celebrates the vision and the legacy of a remarkable man. |
