WINTER BAND CONCERT

On Tuesday, February 21st, a large gathering of musicians, their families and St. Albans City School staff met in the big gym for a concert. Fifth through eighth graders showcased their brand-new or more polished musical skills over a 1 ½ hour time period. It was inspiring to hear their performances and to see how many students have chosen to become musicians. Mr. Kelly and Mr. Charpentier, the two main instructors, were proud of their students participation and abilities.

Public access TV recorded a video that will be edited and made available for viewing in the coming weeks. Photos were taken of many of the students, assuming they were visible from the sidelines among tight orchestra and band groups and amid many tall music stands.

TRIUMPH LUNCHEON MATH PROJECT - DUFRESNE

Hello Families! Students on Team Triumph have been working really hard these past couple of weeks in math class with their luncheon projects. The luncheon project consists of the students finding “the best bang for their buck” (based on the amount allotted to them through the team budget) when planning, purchasing, and creating a lunch for classmates and themselves. Photos were taken on 2-22-2023 at Hannafords.

BOOKS TO CONSIDER READING IN THE LIBRARY

Curious about Audiobooks at Our School? - Click on this link.

The St. Albans City School Library honors Black History Month with a curated booklist of recent works that examine the Black experience. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in history. These books will honor and highlight powerful stories and can be found in our school library today!

Henry Brown doesn't know how old he is. Nobody keeps records of slaves' birthdays. All the time he dreams about freedom, but that dream seems farther away than ever when he is torn from his family and put to work in a warehouse. Henry grows up and marries, but he is again devastated when his family is sold at the slave market. Then one day, as he lifts a crate at the warehouse, he knows exactly what he must do: He will mail himself to the North. After an arduous journey in the crate, Henry finally has a birthday -- his first day of freedom.

Twelve-year-old Kingston James is sure his brother Khalid has turned into a dragonfly. When Khalid unexpectedly passed away, he shed what was his first skin for another to live down by the bayou in their small Louisiana town. Khalid still visits in dreams, and King must keep these secrets to himself as he watches grief transform his family.

It would be easier if King could talk with his best friend, Sandy Sanders. But just days before he died, Khalid told King to end their friendship, after overhearing a secret about Sandy-that he thinks he might be gay. "You don't want anyone to think you're gay too, do you?"

But when Sandy goes missing, sparking a town-wide search, and King finds his former best friend hiding in a tent in his backyard, he agrees to help Sandy escape from his abusive father, and the two begin an adventure as they build their own private paradise down by the bayou and among the dragonflies. As King's friendship with Sandy is reignited, he's forced to confront questions about himself and the reality of his brother's death.

The story of one of the most influential civil rights activist of our time.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was only 25 when he helped organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott and was soon organizing black people across the country in support of the right to vote, desegregation, and other basic civil rights. Maintaining nonviolent and peaceful tactics even when his life was threatened, King was also an advocate for the poor and spoke out against racial and economic injustice until his death—from an assassin's bullet—in 1968. With clearly written text that explains this tumultuous time in history and 80 black-and-white illustrations, this Who Was? celebrates the vision and the legacy of a remarkable man.
