TECH & ENGINEERING DAY AT BFA

Eight grade students from both 7th & 8th grade learning communities competed at the Tech and Engineering Day at BFA.  Some students made bridges, pinewood cars, and edible vehicles.  Others competed in crack the code games, Operation, Color Wheel, tower building, and Doodlebot.  St. Albans City School finished tied with MVU for first place as a school but lost in the playoff round when Mr. Rouleau lost in Lawn Jenga.  All the participants gained valuable experiences with solving problems.  Link to 25 Pictures.

VOYAGERS 5TH GRADE & IMAGINATION 1ST GRADE - LEARNED WATER FACTS

Ms. Bashaw took her 5th grade students to Ms. Bachand’s 1st grade classroom for a quick lesson on fresh and salt water. After quizzing the 1st graders on what they knew about water, Ms. Bashaw used a large measuring cup of blue water to represent the entire earth’s water supply. She then had several students come to the front of the class and remove volumes of water in teaspoons and tablespoons that represented non-ocean water sources. These samples were placed in little cups. From this little demonstration, it was clear that only about 3% of the world’s water is suitable for drinking, agriculture or most industrial purposes. We need to be careful with the salt-free water we have.

Students then moved to the library where the 5th graders read water-related children’s books to the 1st graders. When the reading was finished, all students worked on water-related coloring sheets. Link to 17 Pictures.

LIBRARY

Curious about Audiobooks at Our School? - Click on this link.

March is Women's History Month – commemorating and encouraging the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in history.  Take a look at the collection of books that you can find in our library!

Link to all the books relevant to Women's History Month.

Here are today's highlighted books...

The inspiring story of Dr. Patricia Bath, a groundbreaking ophthalmologist who pioneered laser surgery—and gave her patients the gift of sight.

Born in the 1940s, Patricia Bath dreamed of being an ophthalmologist at a time when becoming a doctor wasn’t a career option for most women—especially African-American women. This empowering biography follows Dr. Bath in her quest to save and restore sight to the blind, and her decision to “choose miracles” when everyone else had given up hope. Along the way, she cofounded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, invented a specialized laser for removing cataracts, and became the first African-American woman doctor to receive a medical patent.

Starred reviews hail Streetcar to Justice as "a book that belongs in any civil rights library collection" (Publishers Weekly) and "completely fascinating and unique” (Kirkus). An ALA Notable Book and winner of a Septima Clark Book Award from the National Council for the Social Studies.

One hundred years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, Elizabeth Jennings’s refusal to leave a segregated streetcar in the Five Points neighborhood of Manhattan set into motion a major court case in New York City.

On her way to church one day in July 1854, Elizabeth Jennings was refused a seat on a streetcar. When she took her seat anyway, she was bodily removed by the conductor and a nearby police officer and returned home bruised and injured. With the support of her family, the African American abolitionist community of New York, and Frederick Douglass, Elizabeth Jennings took her case to court. Represented by a young lawyer named Chester A. Arthur (a future president of the United States) she was victorious, marking a major victory in the fight to desegregate New York City’s public transportation.

Fifty years after her refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus, Mrs. Rosa Parks is still one of the most important figures in the American civil rights movement. This tribute to Mrs. Parks is a celebration of her courageous action and the events that followed.

Award-winning poet, writer, and activist Nikki Giovanni's evocative text combines with Bryan Collier's striking cut-paper images to retell the story of this historic event from a wholly unique and original perspective.
