WACKY WEDNESDAY RENAISSANCE M&MS

RED CLOVER AND GOLDEN DOME AWARD NOMINEE BOOK READERS - MURPHY & LEVINE

A group of Ms. Murphy’s Discovery readers met in the library to share their thoughts on the books nominated for awards. To attend this discussion and to be able to vote on their choices for the awards, the students had to have read at least five of the nominated books. Some had read as many as a dozen. It was a fun opportunity for the students to share their joy of reading interesting books. The students left with certificates honoring their reading prowess.

MAJORETTES AND BAND PRACTICED MARCHING TOGETHER - KELLY & TRAINER

During breakfast time on Wednesday morning, the majorettes and senior band marched around the bus loop together. Several of the classroom groups facing the bus loop area came out to watch the marching students and to cheer them on. Link to 25 Pictures.

MURAL CREATED IN OPEN DOORS FOR MAPLE FESTIVAL

For the past few weeks Ms. Mackenzie, Ms. Lawyer's kindergarten class and (8th Grade Renaissance) Lily Hockhousen, have been working on a mural for the Saint Albans Maple Festival window competition.  Rail City Market asked the school if students would be willing to help decorate their store front window this year. The theme for this years window completion is “Maple - The Heart of Vermont." Voting begins April 21st and runs through April 30th for people’s choice. If you would like to vote you can find the link to voting in the store front's window.

Throughout the mural you will find what we felt represented maple. Our main piece was a maple tree which we felt was a big piece to how maple syrup is produced. From there we made pancakes, donuts, bacon, creemees and other maple related items. Ms.Lawyer's Kindergarten helped participate in coloring the maple leaves for the branches.

It will be seen by thousands of Maple Festival attendees. This event will take place on on April 28, 29, 30 2023 in St. Albans. Link to 7 Pictures.

SEED PAPER GLOBES

On Wednesday in miss Ross’ class we made tissue paper “seed paper” globes. The paper has a variety of wildflower seeds embedded in them and we used the paper to make these globes and planted them in pots to grow our plants over vacation! We had a great time. Link to 12 Pictures.

INVESTIGATOR ROBOTS - RANKIN

SUMMER FOOD ASSISTANCE

Vermont will be issuing a final round of Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) benefits for Summer 2023. All students at our school qualify for a Summer P-EBT benefit of $120 per student. This is because of the way that we are offering free school meals to all students this year.

The benefit will be sent to the head of household and mailing address that we have on file for your student. If you have moved or need to update the head of household, please let us know by Wednesday, May 10th. To make changes, please contact Jennifer Seymour at Jseymour@maplerun.org

These benefits will be sent out by mid-August. If your student missed school for a COVID-related reason between February 2023 and May 11, 2023, you will receive benefits for those days at the same time.

Please see Frequently‐Asked Questions (FAQs) About School Pandemic EBT (P‐EBT) for more information. If you need to request a new card or have more questions about P-EBT, visit https://dcf.vermont.gov/esd/P-EBT or call 1‐800‐479‐6151, option 7.

This institution is an equal opportunity provider.

RED CLOVER AND GOLDEN DOME BOOK AWARD NOMINEES

THE LAST CUENTISTA by Donna Barba Higuera

Storytelling changes a new world in this enthralling mix of Mexican folklore and science-fiction adventure. Halley’s comet is about to destroy the Earth, so 14-year-old Petra and family have embarked on one of three spaceships on a 300+-year journey to the distant planet Sagan. When Petra awakes from stasis, however, she finds that the ship has been taken over by the sinister Collective, her family has been purged, and the remaining survivors have had their memories reprogrammed. Petra resists reprogramming – and eventually, through her retellings of her grandmother’s cuentos, helps other young passengers in a plan to escape.

THE LEGEND OF AUNTIE PO by Shing Yin Khor

It’s 1885 and 13-year old Mei is the pie-baking, storytelling daughter of the head cook in a Sierra Nevada logging camp. As Chinese immigrants, she and her father find their lives clouded by racism and the ramifications of the Chinese Exclusion Act. Even the respect of the camp foreman and Mei’s close relationship with his daughter, Bea, can’t change their difficult and painful reality. However, as Mei entertains the camp children by reimagining the myth of Paul Bunyan in the form of feisty larger-than-life Chinese matriarch Auntie Po, she begins to imagine rewriting her own story too. A brave and hopeful graphic novel.
