PICTURES & NEWS CIVILIAN CITATION AWARD TO BUS DRIVER CAITLYN CHARLAND On April 13th, 2023, Caitlyn Charland was preparing her school bus for a group of City School students who were going on a field trip. The bus was parked in the loading zone on Calvary St. at the rear of the St Albans City School. At this time, a vehicle could be seen reversing out of the Mount Calvary Cemetery towards the front of the bus. Caitlyn noticed the vehicle and could be seen honking the horn on the bus in an effort to get the operator’s attention. The vehicle continued to slowly roll over the sidewalk and towards the school's rear entrance where 13 children and two staff members were walking to get onto the bus. As the vehicle approached the students, Caitlyn can be seen running from the bus towards the group of children in an effort to keep them from being struck. Once the vehicle came to rest, Caitlyn could be seen ushering the students onto the bus out of harm’s way. She then moved the bus to a safe space. In this incident, Caitlyn Charland has displayed personal courage in putting herself at risk for the sake of others. The St. Albans Police Department extends their gratitude for her decisions and actions during this event. Civilian Citation is an award that is presented to non-sworn individuals, i.e. citizens, employees, etc., whose actions result in the apprehension of criminals, lifesaving, or assisting the Department in combating crime. Thank you, Caitlyn, for your courage and actions on this day TROUT UPDATE 5-10-2023 - USA ROULEAU This is the last update on the trout. Look for these books in our library to help you honor and celebrate the historical and cultural contributions of individuals and groups of Asian and Pacific Islander descent. Getting to feel at home in a new country Yoon's name means "shining wisdom," and when she writes it in Korean, it looks happy, like dancing figures. But her father tells her that she must learn to write it in English. In English, all the lines and circles stand alone, which is just how Yoon feels in the United States. Yoon isn't sure that she wants to be YOON. At her new school, she tries out different names―maybe CAT or BIRD. Maybe CUPCAKE! A khimar is a flowing scarf that my mommy wears. Before she walks out the door each day, she wraps one around her head. A young girl plays dress up with her mother’s headscarves, feeling her mother’s love with every one she tries on. Charming and vibrant illustrations showcase the beauty of the diverse and welcoming community in this portrait of a young Muslim American girl’s life. |
