SIXTH GRADE BIKE TRIP TO THE ABBEY
About 45 students and an array of adults went on a bicycle ride to a riverside picnic area at the Abbey Restaurant. This business is located about 11 miles out on the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail. 6-12-2023. This annual St. Albans City School bike trip is a celebration event where sixth graders can enjoy being with their peers before moving up to the older middle-school grades. This trip has been a right of passage for 6th graders at St. Albans City School for more than a decade. At least a dozen students chose to ride back to school rather than take the bus back after lunch. Pictures were shared by a variety of adults on the trip; Ms. Brown, Ms. Smullen, Ms. Chisholm, Mr. Craib, and a parent. Thank you. Link to 114 photos.

EXPLORERS CARNIVAL
The Explorers team took advantage of the warm and dry weather to hold a series of fun outdoor carnival activities. The pictures we have cover just a fraction of the games the students played on that day. Link to 11 Pictures.

EXPLORERS SMASHED PIES INTO TEACHERS FACES
Various staff members (Cavallo, Rouleau, Van Guilder, Borst, Weisburgh, Bachand) all volunteered to have Explorers students smash a pie plate filled with whipped cream into their faces. Apparently, the students who got to do this were winners in some way. Ms. Smith captured the event in photos. Link to 51 Pictures

Link to 8 second video of Ms. Cavallo getting pied.  More video clips will be added tomorrow.

ONE MORE FUN ACTIVITY - DANCING IN A BOX
Ms. Smith took photos and video clips of students and staff members dancing to music within the confines of a box outside of Ms. Rouleau's office area. It was a chance to let loose to some funky musica and have fun in the last days of school. 6-13-2023. Link to 35 pictures and video clips.

INFORMATION ABOUT TEMPORARY SUMMER FOOD BENEFITS

FOR ALL STUDENTS

All students at our school will be receiving the Summer P-EBT benefit of $120 which can be spent on food at the grocery store, farmers markets, and some convenience stores and online retailers.

  • If your family has previously received a P-EBT benefit or receives 3SquaresVT, the summer benefit will be added to your existing card in late July or early August. If you have lost or thrown away your card, please call 1‐800‐479‐6151, option 7 for a replacement card.

  • If you have never received a P-EBT benefit for any children in your household, you will be mailed a new card in late July or early August. You will be mailed instructions for activating the new card in a separate letter. These instructions include a 9-digit number that you will need to use instead of your social security number when you activate the card or when you call the call center. It is not a real social security number. To activate the card, enter the last four digits of the number in the letter when you are asked for the last four digits of your social security number. You will also need to enter the date of birth of your oldest child listed in the letter using 8 digits in a MM/DD/YYYY format. Please look for the letter in the mail and do not throw it away. Both the card and the letter will be mailed by the Vermont Department of Children and Families.

If your address changes over the summer, please call 1‐800‐479‐6151, option 7 to update your address.

All students at our school are entitled to receive this benefit. If you do not wish to use your benefit to buy food for your own family, we encourage you to use it to buy food for a local food pantry. Benefits that are not used will be sent back to the federal government. You may not give your card to anyone else, but you may buy food for others with the card.

If you have more questions about P-EBT, please visit the P-EBT website.

June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. During this month-long celebration we recognize the resilience and determination of the many individuals who fight to live freely and authentically. In doing so, we are opening hearts and minds, and laying the foundation for a more just and equitable America. Please check out these books in our library today to learn more about people and characters that represent our diverse community!

While young children are avid observers and questioners of their world, adults often shut down or postpone conversations on complicated topics because it's hard to know where to begin. Research shows that talking about issues like race and gender from the age of two not only helps children understand what they see, but also increases self-awareness, self-esteem, and allows them to recognize and confront things that are unfair, like discrimination and prejudice.

Brian has always been anxious, whether at home, or in class, or on the basketball court. His dad tries to get him to stand up for himself and his mom helps as much as she can, but after he and his brother are placed in foster care, Brian starts having panic attacks. Ezra's always been popular. He's friends with most of the kids on his basketball team--even Brian, who usually keeps to himself. But now, some of his friends have been acting differently, and Brian seems to be pulling away. Ezra wants to help, but he worries if he's too nice to Brian, his friends will realize that he has a crush on him . . . But when Brian and his brother run away, Ezra has no choice but to take the leap and reach out. Both boys have to decide if they're willing to risk sharing parts of themselves they'd rather hide. But if they can be brave, they might just find the best in themselves--and each other.

From the acclaimed creator of Dancing at the Pity Party and Roaring Softly, this picture book is a pure celebration of all the different human bodies that exist in the world. Highlighting the various skin tones, body shapes, and hair types is just the beginning in this truly inclusive book. With its joyful illustrations and encouraging refrain, it will instill body acceptance and confidence in the youngest of readers.
