NEWS AND PICTURES

COOKING CAMP WITH KAIJU KITCHEN CHEF SATO

Ms. Sato's husband, Mr. Takafumi Sato, runs the Kaiju Kitchen Japanese Takeout Restaurant here in St. Albans. Mr. and Ms. Sato both came to the cooking camp to introduce students to making and eating sushi (flavored rice rolls). Sushi does not have to contain raw fish and the ones the campers made did not. Both instructors had the full and focused attention of everyone present in the room as they walked campers through the assembly process with sticky rice, sesame seeds, crab, cucumbers, and avocados. Soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi were flavoring side options. Many of these food items were new to the students. Some campers were willing to stretch their food palates while others were happy to assemble but not eat their product. Each camper finished the cooking lesson with a paper bag including sushi recipes, a pair of chopsticks, and a special mat used to help shape the sushi rolls. Link to 66 Pictures

SKETCHBOOK CAMP
Our camp story: Instructor Ms. Jess Wilson is a professional artist who has been commissioned to paint murals in Waterbury, VT, and Portland, OR.  Instructor Ms. Brittany Huber has been taking art classes at Davis Studio in South Burlington - two drawing, one painting. Neither of the instructors has much time to practice their art so they thought this summer camp would be a great way to share their passion for gardening/plants/being outdoors and drawing with students. Sketching is a great thing to teach because it is easily differentiated. Student artists can be at various levels but still improve and hopefully learn something new.

Campers do a daily practice contour drawing (line drawing). Each day has a theme such as values/shading, seeing like an artist, composition, and so on. The content is dictated by student interests. For instance, what they draw depends on if they simply want to draw or if they want to include plant identification in their process.

Every camper will leave the camp with their sketchbook and drawing materials. Each lesson is prefaced with the point that the sketchbook is theirs and sharing is optional. It has been really fun to see each person's improvement. Attached are photos from the rainy camp day on Thursday last week. Typically the group would go outside to find a reference object to sketch, instead, the artists found an object in the library or from a book to draw from reference. After their warmup, students chose a topic of interest and a book to draw from.  Link to 7 Pictures.

COMMUNITY SERVICE CAMP

We went to the Food Shelf on Wednesday and helped stock all the shelves for the less fortunate in our community. The kids had a blast! We even had a visit from the office dog “Mufassa". Link to 10 Pictures.

OUTDOOR GAMES

Outdoor games played a big game of tic tac toe outside! Link to 3 Pictures.

HIP-HOP DANCE CAMP
Dancers are not dancing the whole camp morning. There is time for less structured play. Ms. Patty Pizzaro captured some of those moments in this link to 8 pictures.

INFORMATION ABOUT TEMPORARY SUMMER FOOD BENEFITS

FOR ALL STUDENTS

All students at our school will be receiving the Summer P-EBT benefit of $120 which can be spent on food at the grocery store, farmers markets, and some convenience stores and online retailers.

  • If your family has previously received a P-EBT benefit or receives 3SquaresVT, the summer benefit will be added to your existing card in late July or early August. If you have lost or thrown away your card, please call 1‐800‐479‐6151, option 7 for a replacement card.

  • If you have never received a P-EBT benefit for any children in your household, you will be mailed a new card in late July or early August. You will be mailed instructions for activating the new card in a separate letter. These instructions include a 9-digit number that you will need to use instead of your social security number when you activate the card or when you call the call center. It is not a real social security number. To activate the card, enter the last four digits of the number in the letter when you are asked for the last four digits of your social security number. You will also need to enter the date of birth of your oldest child listed in the letter using 8 digits in a MM/DD/YYYY format. Please look for the letter in the mail and do not throw it away. Both the card and the letter will be mailed by the Vermont Department of Children and Families.

If your address changes over the summer, please call 1‐800‐479‐6151, option 7 to update your address.

All students at our school are entitled to receive this benefit. If you do not wish to use your benefit to buy food for your own family, we encourage you to use it to buy food for a local food pantry. Benefits that are not used will be sent back to the federal government. You may not give your card to anyone else, but you may buy food for others with the card.

If you have more questions about P-EBT, please visit the P-EBT website.

Find open summer meal sites serving children 18 and under by visiting the USDA Meal Finder, by calling 2-1-1 or by texting FOOD to 304-304.  Information about summer meal sites will start to populate in these locations next week and will be updated on a weekly basis throughout the summer.  In addition, consider looking at Stretch Your Budget with Vermont Food Programs”, one page resource for households.  This handout provides information on summer meal sites as well as many other food resources.
