Second Grade Pencil Challenge

On Wednesday, the second graders from each team gathered in the library to find out about a new challenge presented to them by Mrs. Cavallo. To illustrate an ongoing problem, their teachers put on a little skit showing the kids what it looks like when there is a test and students are not prepared. Even though the skit was very funny and entertaining, everyone definitely got the message... that it takes away from valuable instruction and learning time when students don't have pencils sharpened and ready at the beginning of each class. Each 1-3 Learning Community was given a bin containing 1000 pencils. The second grade is going to be in charge of the pencils for their whole community. They are challenged with making these pencils last until Thanksgiving 2012. Any team that can bring at least one pencil from the original 1000 presented to them to Mrs. Cavallo next Thanksgiving, wins! Their first step is to count and verify that their bin contains 1000 pencils. Once they do that, the challenge begins. Good Luck 2nd Graders!
News from The Travelers

The normal noise level of Mr. E’s class is gone on Wednesday mornings, not that the active third graders have nothing to say but they have a silent morning meeting. This is due to the two deaf children in his class. The rest of the class wanted to learn more about deafness, so through the help of Annie Coppock, teacher of the deaf and Hilda Costello, the rest of the class is learning American Sign Language.

The class starts with a greeting where the children silently greet each other with a question and receive signed answer. The kids later review vocabulary words and review their questioning techniques. New words are introduced and the kids will play a game using the words they have learned.

Mr. E. explained to the kids that they could be with their deaf classmates for years to come. It would be nice to be able to communicate with everyone in their class and they could really be a help to them even when they are not in their class. It has been proven that immersion is the best way to learn a new language it is evident from the signing taking place in Mr. Edwards’ class that immersion is working.

Third Grade Investigators Start a Card-Making Business

Third graders on the Investigator team have recently started a card making business. They are learning the ins and outs of what it means to design, produce, market, manage, ship and deliver a product. Each student in class has a production job ranging from gluing to stamping to tying ribbon, though everyone chips in when a job needs to be done. Leadership responsibilities include line leader managers, publicists, accountants, salespeople and more!

Students are currently in the process of decided what they’d like to do with the money they earn. Some would like to purchase sleds recess. Others are interested in finding a charity to donate a portion of the money.

Cards are currently for sale from Tuesday, December 13th –Friday December 16th. Please stop by our classroom, A-5, to speak to one of our salespeople and place your order. We are open for sales at the following times: 7:45-8:50, 12:30-1:45, 2:30-3:00
